I wouldnt raise my family there but we visit memphis every month to see my family. Things we love:
1. The gorgeous houses of midtown-as I've said before, some of them are picture-taking pretty. These people love where they live and wouldnt leave for the world
2. Shopping-lots of great shopping areas. Saddlebrook Mall in Germantown, WOlfchase in Bartlett, Oak Court Mall on Poplar, lots of great locally owned places on Madison and Union.
3. Eating- we love to eat in Memphis. Hueys' is an absolute must for us every time we come. Best burgers in town, great kabobs, amazing selection of beer, great atmosphere and lots of good live music. The Rendezvous is my hands-down favorite bbq place ever. Chez Phillipe is super expensive but amazing food at the Peabody Hotel. Dan Mcguiness and Flying Saucer pups are great for hanging out. Blues City Cafe has great food and great live music.
3. Music-so many great places to see bands! The Young AVenue Deli, The Hi-Tone, Huey's, The New Daisy on Beale, The Orpheum, and many other venues will usually have someone great playing.
4. The Studio onthe Square-great place for movies. Relaxed, laid back theater unlike anything we have around here.
5. Overton Park and the Memphis Zoo-very nice places to hang out and a much better than average zoo.
6. Dabble Hair Salon-I love the gals here. I don't know what styles you're into but I have a ball getting my hair done at this quirky little salon.

Memphis
Memphis has its challenges, but for me, the good far outpaces the bad. Amen to all of the wonderful, positive things posted above.

Not very many single, young, professional people in Memphis, per capita (just so many poor people, uneducated people, etc) so dating can be quite a challenge. Plus, just generalizing it because it's in the south, southern culture typically has people marrying much younger and thus are already married with kids by age 23. Of course, these are generalizations but are somewhat true here. I've found it more difficult to make friends here than in other cities, just due to the fact that there are few other single young professional people out there. I work in a huge place, yet 19/20 people I work with are either married, have young kids, are much older, etc etc. Still good people, but not like me.
If you move here, definitely get involved with Mpact, which is a group for young professionals who promote Memphis and try to get people involved with the city. There are also good volunteer programs, like Hands on Memphis.

I think the Skatepark is a little young for me I know they have bands there, but I'm still at a older age I think. Plus, Cordova....too far! I have made do over the years, but I think it's a big culture shock for people who move here from cities that have huge young professional populations.

Memphis (city) is about 70-80% black. So, I would guess there is a lot more inter-racial dating here, just given the demographics. I don't think in most major cities you are going to have a hassle with that these days. That's the least of our worries here in Memphis!

I grew up in Memphis and moved to Phoenix, moved back to Memphis end of 2006 and now live back in Phoenix.
The public schools are horrible but if you can afford a private one then you will be OK. The prime areas to live (which are very few and far from everyting) Collierville and Germantown. You can also live in Mississippi and still work in Memphis - if you dont mid the commute - or live in Arkansas and commute into Memphis - that is the best way to avoid all the garbage that has taken over the city.
