within Memphis, we (my girlfriend and I) havnt had any bad attitudes towards it at all. I keep seeing more and more inter-racial couples around town, mostly black/white and white/asian couples. we've had some pretty disgusting looks when going to see my family in Jonesboro, AR (about 1hr NW of Memphis) but, not much in town. |

Interracial relationships don't even catch my attention anymore. They used to because I'm from a smaller town where that kind of thing is taboo.
The only time I even notice interracial couples in Memphis is when someone from my native hometown visits here and points it out to me. I think most people here tend to mind their own business and not worry too much about what other people are doing. Personally, I couldn't care less. As long as you're not making noise keeping me up at night or disrupting my dinner when I'm dining out, then you're ok with me. |

Defi: Jonesboro is the pits!!!
I definitely wouldn't worry here in Memphis. We're a big urban city, not some tiny little redneck town. We're southern, but not in the confederate flag toting sense. But agree with Crystal: memphis gets worse whining and complaining than any city I've seen too. If you don't like it, fine, but try to be a better person and add some good points to the 400 bad ones. You are so right. |

not to stray too much off topic, but Jonesboro is definatly not a great place to be.

It exists, definitely. It depends on what you're looking for. One observation I've seen that isn't unique to Memphis is that people get hitched pretty early in the South. But if you're a young professional, there are a number of events geared toward your demo -- MPact, trolley art tour, Flying Saucer on Mondays, Thursday rooftop parties, Tuesday (I think) pint nights at Fox n Hound, etc. You also inquired into interracial dating, and I think it's less of an issue for young professionals than other demos.

Are you Kidding me? I don't even know why they allowed such a racist comment to be posted. I live in Virginia, but I was born and raised in Memphis. My husband and I have lived in several places in the US, and there is still no place like home. The biggest problem that is facing Memphis is RACISM. It's amazing how there are so many posts on here that boast about how they make sure to live anywhere but actually in Memphis. Live where you want, but if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem. Its this blatant segregation that makes the city the way it is. There are churches on every corner in and around the city, but Sunday is the most Segregated day of week. Have you ever volunteered in the inner city? Better yet, would you? Memphis seems to be good enough for you all to enjoy when you want to be entertained, but will any of you ever give back to it? I think not. I feel sorry for the children in the Memphis City School System, just like you all, the officials there, you avoid them like the plague. My prayer is that one day some will think about them, not talk about. It's not just your kids that deserve better. Think About It, then do something about it.

I love how people get on here assuming that the rest of the posters are just complaining and have never tried to help.
Mandljoy - why do you assume us Memphians don't volunteer? That we don't "go into the inner city"? That we're not trying to do something about it? And churches being segregated has little to do with "segregation." That's like complaining that Jews are segregating themselves by not attending Mass on Sunday mornings. People have different religions, and races tend be different religions. Southern baptists tend to be white. Catholics tend to be white. Church of god in christ tends to be black. That's just what religion people are. |

there are lots and lots of 'black' southern baptist churches in town, but everything is still ran much differently than the 'white' southern baptists. i dont 'do' the whole church thing, but the white churches seem to be very slow and boring, just get in and get out type deals, whereas black churches are dancing, praising, and having fun. it's really much more of a 'spirit filled' atmosphere.
and, before i offend some of the white church goers on here, im not bashing your experience, you'd just have to go to a black church and see for yourself. |
