We walked around Beale street which was just OK- wish we had gone down to the Cooper Young area but it was on a Sunday. The mapquest directions were all perfect and it seemed rather easy to get around. She is only a Junior so we have many more colleges to look at. I am glad the first one was a pleasant one. I have always heard the area around Rhodes was dangerous but the houses all looked well kept and were not dumpy looking.
My comment really has nothing to do with Memphis but with our ongoing rivalry....and I will not be harsh in this venue but with that said...
I certainly hope your daughter decides to visit Sewanee as well

i adore sewanee---academically, geographically, and architecturally. in fact, i would prefer it over rhodes because of its "oxford-cambridge" feel and look, and because i am episcopailian. it is a beautiful campus. nonetheless, it, unless recently changed, is not rated as high academically---based on % of national merit scholarships, high school gpa's, act, and sat scores---as an undergraduate liberal arts school. if memory serves me correctly, rhodes costs a thousand or two more yearly than sewanee---may be the other way 'round.

i am a nature lover, somewhat of an introvert, have several hobbies that require solitude and a single hand, and somewhat of a bookworm. i have friends who loved their visits to sewanee. two or three were absolutely brilliant intellectually. when they visited sewanee for entrance interview, they ultimately chose other schools because of sewanee's mountainous geographical isolation and their fear that attending sewanee would isolate them from too much peer activity w/ students from other colleges and universities. one of my closest friends was offered a practically full academic scholarship for all four years; however, she turned it down to attend the university of memphis. her main reason for passing on sewanee was her fear of geographic isolation. as i have already made plain, i would have chosen sewanee over rhodes, but others would probably choose rhodes because of its urban setting. tn is fortunate to have both institutions w/in its borders.

Rhodes has been "ranked" as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. I only wish that they would grow into a full-fledged research university -- a private complement to the public offerings at U of M and, farther away, Ole Miss.

One reason they might be overlooked is its relative small size -- not a research university, not a D-1 sports school. Their faculty is often the source of reference for the media when it comes to politics, and it does help contribute to the feel of a cultural neighborhood, with its proximity to the Zoo, Overton Park, Brooks, Museum of Art, etc, although they all could be tied together better.

I just came back to this thread - WE have only looked at B'ham Southern- we are from Birmingham - she does not want to go to BSC- anyway- as I've talked to freinds of friends etc that we are looking at Rhodes-I have not found one person say they didn't like Rhodes- My daughter was impressed with the work that Rhodes students do at St. Jude's -not sure what she plans to study quite yet but interested in sciences- we are headed down to Rollins, Stetson and Eckerd over spring break- so she will have something to compare Rhodes to- Thanks for all of your insight!!

Being born and raised in Memphis, you won't be disappointed with Rhodes. I personally went to the UofM myself. I heard that the kids that are on the waiting list to get into Harvard go to Rhodes. That's just what I heard though. They have alot of students from out of town. Seems like they have alot of students from Texas. Academics there are top notch. Job placement is really good as well from what I hear.

I have never heard that about Harvard rejects going to Rhodes-in all my books there is nothing comparing Rhodes to Harvard- I know that my daughter can get in Rhodes but no way can she get in Harvard!! Where did you get that info?

I doubt it's true but I read about it somewhere or heard it from someone. Even if there is a "waiting list" it wouldn't be very many.

Could be a grain of truth in that, at least for the locals. Couple of my sons friends from WSHS that applied for "top notch" schools wound up at Rhodes, although I don't know if that was because they didn't get accepted at the other schools, or maybe Rhodes just offered a better deal, or what. One local kid I know did get accepted to a top school, but opted for Rhodes because she decided she wasn't ready to be on her own in a strange city.
