In a recent post, a local blogger (
Paul Ryburn’s Journal — Daily thoughts of a Downtown Memphis resident) reported on a South Main Association meeting, where they discussed several events occurring downtown and in the South Main neighborhood. I mention this only to spread the word of the plethora of events that occur downtown that most Memphians do not realize. You need to get out and go to meetings and network socially. The Clean Memphis organization seems like it organized a spectacularly successful event with 300 folks committing to clean downtown, then having a party to reward the volunteers afterwards.

Despite what others would have you believe, there are thousands of Memphians who are dedicated to improve the condition of their area. Whether it's MPact, Residents for a Safer Downtown Memphis, Clean Memphis, Wolf River Conservancy, etc, those people exist. And beyond that, there are neighborhood organizations such as South Main and Uptown Memphis, as well as certainly several more in Midtown and around the city which seek to increase the sense of community. I'm not sure if other neighborhoods get the same kind of presentations as SMA, but that's in part because so many important venues and organizations are located downtown.
Anyhoo, given the report from the SMA meeting, South Main appears very active w/ respect to involvement/visibility of residents and events that are going on.
