My favorite place was mentioned by name but the wrong location was given. Leonard's BBQ downtown location was mentioned. That location (if it is still there) is Leonard's in name only. They buy the sauce from the original restaurant.
On the link above, check out the In The News section. I've seen them on the local Fox during the news, Southern Routes on PBS and the Food Networks "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives". After the DDD episode ran, they put up a map of the US and people who decided to try Leonard's based on the show started putting pins in the map. Within a week, they had visitors from all 50 states as well as a handful of foreign countries. -Robert |

We just spent a week in the Memphis area, grandson was playing in a baseball tournament. We went to Rendezvous, okay, but overpriced, being from Kansas City and loving our BBQ here, were very excited to try Memphis style. Intersate was the best we had all week! The slaw was to die for. Bad thing about Rendezvous was the homeless people walking up to you when you walk out of the place asking for your box of leftovers. Thank heavens DH had them. What if my 10 yr old grandson had been carrying the box and someone grabbed it out of his hands? After DH was approached DGS started crying and begged for us to go back to our motel. He was scared. I wish I had seen this thread before our trip, we never would have gone to Rendezvous. I would have to say Interstate was the best Q we had while there. DH said the ribs were fall off the bone tender with great flavor. DGS loved the BBQ spaghetti and the BBQ nachos. The Interstate we ate at was in Southaven.

I grew up on Showboat barbeque. Also, for something different Bigfoot Lodge's barbeque eggrolls are awesome!!!

Amen to Showboat! They have the best bbq sandwiches in Memphis, period (fighting words, I know).
The meat is great, the slaw is awesome and the fries that come with your plate are always hot. The beans are to die for, also. FYI--If you are in Collierville, Captain John's on HWY 72 uses the same recipe as Showboat is is excellent. |

Nobody has mentioned the place where we got all of our pulled pork for bbq when I was in high school and everytime I get back to Memphis I go there and it tastes exactly the same...........The place at White Station and Mendenhall..........3 Little Pigs. I swear the same people are there every single time I go in.........Never had a real bbq sandwich better anywhere.....It's a bit out of the way, but even the atmosphere inside the place is a classic southern diner type place............Food is EXCELLENT!

I was thinking Captain John's. They're good also.
When my grandmother was alive and working at the cleaners that was on Knight Arnold in the 80's the owner of showboat was one of her regular customers. They use to have Halloween parties there. I won a transformer in a costume contest when I was little. The riverboat painted in the window has been there since then. Has to be at least 20 years if not more. |

Heck I have to agree ! the Showboat on Hickory Hill, near the corner of Knight Arnold was even pretty good.. Now of course, the area is practically in the 'hood', and I would not be caught driving over there much .....too bad There was another place down on Winchester, more east towards Germantown, on the north side of Winchester that was pretty good- not great, but it was a fairly large place-dine in and take out- but I can't remember the name ! |

My sister and I came back from Memphis a week ago - you're right about Rendevous - I wasn't impressed. Very over-rated and over-priced. Over crowded, with plastic spoons and forks, and you get your food in a paper lined plastic basket.
I LOVED Silky O'Sullivan's on Beale Street. Great fall off the bone BBQ Ribs. It's the same here in PA - the best BBQ places are the hole in the wall places in the bad end of town. One place, the local health department hasn't visited, and is run out of the guys kitchen. You walk up to the back door and order. You have your choice of BBQ sauce heat: Mild, Hot, and Batman. Now, I've no idea what Batman has to do with extra super hot BBQ sauce, but I love the Batman sauce! ![]() Anyone coming to SWPA, I'll recommend a few good BBQ places. blessings, Shen |
