Default UT Medical Center - safety of area

Hello,

I am considering a residency position in Memphis. As a resident, I would be spending most of my time at Methodist University Hospital. However, I will have a few rotations at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (the MED). I was unable to go visit the MED and look at the surrounding area during my interview. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how safe the area around the MED is. Any information about this question or Memphis in general would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The area within walking distance of The Med is not safe. As for Methodist.Anywhere east of there would be ok. Lots of old historic homes, you may even be able to find a nice garage apt/guest house around there.

Harbor Town is another option. Loads of apt's with young professionals

Welcome to Memphis

I work at The Med and feel comfortable walking around the immediate vicinity -- from the parking lot to the hospital or associated buildings -- but some of the apartments nearby seem rundown/shady looking. One of my colleagues was telling me a prior colleague had his car stolen during broad daylight a couple of years ago. I'm hoping for my sake that it has gotten a little better, but I'm not definite. What's reassuring is seeing the UTHSC police cars driving around fairly frequently (my parking lot is near the UT police station). If you do a search on this forum you will find the link to a crime map. It might be worth it to look at that.

I live on Mud Island, but I know some residents live about 15-20 minutes east of The Med, which would probably be about 10 minutes east of Methodist.

Like to live nearby? Or just walking to and from your car? There are thousands of people who work there, including doctors, nurses, etc, who do just fine getting to and from work. It is closely monitored, much better now than in the past. They are doing a lot of construction and building to the med district right now, and it's only going to get better.

Living nearby is a different story. It's not a good area to live in, although you can go a mile east (midtown) or west (downtown) and be in really great areas.

Thank you all for the replies. I am mainly concerned about safety while at work (walking to and from car, especially since I will be on call and have to do so at night). I really appreciate all of your responses!

If that is all you are worried about, you don't have to worry. I'm an anesthesiologist. Especially during the winter, it is dark when I go to and from work. I have never had more than the usual sense of concern (i.e. in the back of my mind) about my safety when walking to and from my car.

Jefferson, in the area of The Med, is well lit and you are bound to find somebody either walking on the street or standing outside to smoke a cigarette. My parking lot is at Dunlap and Jefferson. UT's police station is at the corner of Dunlap and Madison if I'm not mistaken. The Med begins at Dunlap and Jefferson. So it is not uncommon to see a police car driving around. As long as you don't do anything ridiculously stupid, like flashing money while walking down the street, you should be fine.
