I believe I am shortly going to need to hire the services of a data recovery specialist. I will know tommorow after I open the computer housing up, try a few things....I have googled data recovery and data recovery memphis. I would much rather give the business to a local company than a company out of town. From what I found it looks my only contribution to the local economy will be to FedEx. Anyone know of any local geeks who can compete price and turn-around time with that the national ballpark range looks to be?

Try UpTech Computer on Poplar at Mendenhall (behind the Half Shell, in front of Schnucks). We've used them more than once and have been very pleased.

Thanks guys! We ended up taking our paper weight to Uptech. I was prepared to spend at least fifty just to be told I had a paper weight. However, they looked at it and didn't even charge me the customary $30 for a tech to at least look at it. I called HP and they are replacing my hard drive for free since the machine is less than a year old. I have decided that the price of sending it off to a data recovery place (there are none local that do the intensive recovery), I will just be re entering my work. I will most likely do business with Uptech again, should the need arise.

and for anyone reading this, stop what you are doing and BACK UP YOUR FILES!!
