That's the same as Jackson. Though it takes twice as long to get to Nashville as it does to get to Memphis, Nashville is the preferred place for a weekend shopping/roadtrip excursion.

This is all good info but I've got to admit, it scares me a bit to move near Memphis. I'm coming from Orange County, CA - which is huge. There are good areas and bad. There are areas we don't visit. However, there are more good areas than bad and the rough neighborhoods are easily avoided. Is this true for Memphis? Should a single mom with kids be nervous about this? Would Murfreesboro or East TN be safer for us? Your opinions are most welcome. Thanks so much.

In the Memphis city, there are more bad than good. But the "burbs" make up 1/2 the population here, and they are mostly good. So it really evens out. "Regular" people don't drive into the bad areas, no reason to. As a single mom, just choose a safe area, I would suggest the burbs.

East TN is polar opposite of Memphis. It is very country, rural, outdoorsy. Memphis is the epitome of "urban." It would be like comparing Detroit to Portland or something like that. Or...well, Detroit to rural Oregon how about

The only thing of east TN that I know is from friends...it is very poor and rural. Esp the closer you get to the Virginia borders.

What are you looking for? You just want to move, no specific area? No job lined up? Just pick a place, find a house, then find a job? Seems like there might be better areas for that than anywhere in TN. I can't remember your specific situation, but it seems lik that is a huge move just to "get away" fromn Cali. And if you were thinking Memphis or east TN...seem like you couldn't get any different. What exactly are you wanting after a move? (sorry, i can't recall your exact situation)

Okay looking back...you're a nurse. That's a job you can get anywhere, but in rural areas it's harder to find jobs of course, and pay is a lot less. Given that you don't care about those things, you might want to consider Chattanooga. it's a bigger city (maybe 4th in TN behind Mem, Nash, and Knox?) but is very outdoorsy and in a pretty area of mountains. It might be good combo of "countryish" and still be in a city wih lots of job opportunities and things to do.

I know it sounds like I'm throwing a dart, I guess I am in a way. Yes, want out of CA. I have friends in Dyersburg. The husband doesn't really like it, the wife wouldn't want to leave. I have friends in M'boro who love it and recommend it there. I want country, have horses and dogs and would like my kids to continue with their excellent education. I love Tennessee just having a hard time finding "home". I really appreciate all your insight.

Have you thought about Nashville? Specifically, the Franklin (Williamson County) area?

I have actually looked in Nashville and in the Murfreesboro area. However, I am looking to also go to a nursing school which Middle TN does not have yet. I found one in West and one in East. Specifically an LVN to BSN program. My preference is actually the Nashville area.

catn --

Have you considered some of the smaller towns near Dyersburg? There's Cape Girardeau, Missouri, which is only an hour drive from Dyersburg. It's a fast-growing and charming town and home of Southeast Missouri State University. I would figure there would be plenty of job opportunities there.

There's also Murray, Kentucky, which is, in my opinion, a wonderful town and would be a great place to raise a family. Paducah, KY, is also close to Dyersburg. Finally, there's Jonesboro, Arkansas, which is a safe place and also a good place to raise a family.

Personally, I would also direct your attention to Jackson, TN, which has a low cost of living and a great hospital. A dozen members of my own family work for the hospital there. If you're a RN, you'd be in good shape there. If I remember correctly, Jackson State Community College has the LPN-to-RN program. If you're adventurous, you can also go RN-to-BSN at Jackson State through the University of Memphis.

Best wishes.

Default Ripley is in the country

I was born in Memphis. My husband was born in Ripley/Halls area. His parents and brother still live in Ripley/Halls off of a street called Curve/Nankipoo Rd. I am not kidding here.

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt...Ripley is in the country. My husband would agree with me (if he were not asleep right now lol.)

Yes they wear shoes, but it is indeed country. We go there to visit every few weeks and they live off a gravel road, they have weeds in the yard instead of grass, the driveway is gravel, there is hardly any good restaurants, there is a lot of farmland...country.

I would not have any knowledge of the area if it were not for the fact I married someone from the area. I do not see any reason that someone from Memphis would know anything about it necessarily.
