I go to white station and live in east memphis, and i love every minute of it. the school is incredible and despite the previous post, we're not all a bunch of calculator punching braniacs who quote historical dates. The optional program (which is just a fancy word for "honors") is relatively easy to get into. the test i took when i moved to memphis was incredibly easy, and i'm no genius. east memphis offers oak court mall and numerous restaurants within just a few miles radius. as a whole, neighbors are friendly and there are tons of kids everywhere. it's really a place where children can ride their bikes and go to friends houses and play in the front yard without fear of their safety every second. just as a side note about white station, i transferred from a school in which i learned absolutely nothing and was way behind everyone else when i entered white station. i'm now taking all honors and AP courses. two years ago i couldn't write a plausible thesis in a standard essay. that's the power of white station... it's an amazing place to receive an education. ( check out newsweek's top 1000 schools in the nation... white station's number 353)

Actually I've live in the NY metropolitan area, as well as Baltimore and DC. (not exactly one-horse towns)....DC is by far the worst...but Memphis is getting worse everyday...that is due to overbuilding and poor planning.....Atlanta is bad, I'll give you that (my daughter live there), but if you're thinking it's a cruise down Germantown Pkwy or the Loop into the city, you are sadly mistaken......Rush hours here always have an accident....
in the morning and the afternoon.....after the rush hours, the traffic is light, but during the typical times for going and coming to work, the traffic is unbelievable, and etting worse every year.

In Memphis, you have the fault line. In New York down to Miami you have the risk of a hurricane. Earthquakes in Cali. Tornadoes in the mid-west. The entire planet Earth could get pelted with meteors. The ice caps could melt and flood the planet. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Get prepared for the environmental disasters of your area.

Please tell me the last time an tornado hit within the city limits............

If you live here, then you should remember a few weeks ago it raining about everyday for 2 weeks straight.

We live in Collierville, and the last bad tornado to go thru here was a year ago in the spring......The schools let the kids out of school during the tornado......REAL INTELLIGENT!

Ad yes, I remember the rain, but that is highly unusual....the summers usually have had a few scattered storms here and there, the rainy season, as told to me by Memphians, is during the late fall and into the winter....

Yes, there are threats of natural disasters everywhere....but this city was ranked in the top ten for almost ALL of them....guess you missed the point!

How can you really give "positive criticism" to the likes of the Ford famiy and Willie Herrington? Harold Ford Jr. is the only hope that city has.......

I am not unhappy with my life, just would prefer it not be here.....but at this point I have no choice. As far as my kids go, 2 are out of college....one lives and works here in Memphis, for the time being, the other is in Atlanta, and tried living here, but did not care for it....My 3rd is gettig ready to graduate from high school, and has gotten used to comments about being a yankee, (in negative terms and by some teachers, and kids calling black kids horrible names...which btw, we are not black, and not being punished for it) Otherwise he is fairly happy here, and I don't say much......I am a frustrated person, who looks around and still sees the 1960's civil rights unsolveded, school ystems which are so overcrowded, which is quickly becoming the norm; developers overbuilding, and taking down natural resources...i.e.cotton fields; history that has disappearded in the homes that the city cannot pay for (Wanting to tear down the Liberty Bowl, but invest a million dollars in it first); off-duty policemen being shot when they stop for milk; students being hurt while walking home from school......that's where my unhappiness comes from....looking at a city that could be a wonderful place IF, things were thought out more carefully, and money wasn't spent on ridiculous things....Many of you have lived here your whole live, while I've watched other cities come from crime ridden disasters to beautiful places.....Baltimore harbor, Phila. Society hill and Headhouse Square....even NY from the 9/11 attacks...there is less crime in NY than ever before.....I just wish there was something to be done....I'd even help....but no one here seems to need or want it!

find a college or university in that circle"

Outside of but within about 150 to 200 miles of Memphis, the most colleges and universities, and enrolled students, are found in eastern Arkansas. This is not what I expected to find.

Bethel College, McKenzie, TN (830 students)
Freed-Hardeman Univ, Henderson, TN (1,950 students)
Lambuth Univ in Jackson, TN (836 undergraduates)
Lane College in Jackson, TN (1,150 undergraduates)
Union Univ in Jackson, TN (~3,800 students)
UT-Martin in Martin, TN (7,000 students)
Western Tennessee, Total: ~15,500 students

Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, MS (425 students)
Delta State Univ. in Cleveland, MS (~3,800 students)
Mississippi Valley State Univ in Itta Bena, MS (2,700 students)
Rust College in Holly Springs, MS (~900 undergraduates)
Univ of Mississippi in Oxford, MS (~14,000 students)
Northern Mississippi, Total: ~22,000 students

Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, AR (~187 students)
Arkansas St. Univ. in Beebe, AR
Arkansas St. Univ. in Jonesboro, AR (~7,500 full-time undergraduates)
Arkansas St. Univ. in Newport, AR
Central Baptist College in Conway, AR (~500 students)
Harding Univ in Searcy, AR (~5,000 undergraduates)
Hendrix College in Conway, AR (~1,000 undergraduates)
Lyon College in Batesville, AR (~500 undergraduates)
Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR (~800 students)
Univ of Arkansas-Little Rock in Little Rock, AR (~12,000 students)
Univ of Central Arkansas in Conway, AR (~10,000 undergraduates)
Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, AR (~600 undergraduates)
Eastern Arkansas, Total: ~31,500 students (not incl. ASU-Beebe and ASU-Newport, but probably incl. part-timers at UALR)>>

Who considers Little Rock or Conway, which is closer to Oklahoma than TN, in Eastern AR? If you add Nashville or even Jackson, MS, which are only 230 or so miles away, and the numbers drastically change.

Please be careful in Memphis. I lived there for 2 years and within the first year I was there I had my car broken into once and stolen twice. I lived right on the outskirts of Bartlett which I was told was a nice and pretty safe area. Yea, right. If you have a nice vehicle, you might want to consider downgrading...especially if it is a sports car or SUV. I lived in RiverTrace Apts so you don't want to live there....this was back in 1996 to 1998 so I imagine the crime has only gotten worse since I lived there. Back then, the police had about 100 cars stolen a day...good luck....I hope you have better luck there than I did in Memphis.

Memphis' crime rate is NOTHING compared to it. How long did u live in all of these cities including Memphis??
I'VE ALSO LIVED IN BALTIMORE AND DC AREA....CRIME IN DC IS PRETTY BAD, I'LL GRANT YOU THAT.....BUT WHILE THEY MAY BE RATED NUMBER 2, MEMPHIS HAS BEEN RATED NUMBER 4........

I THINK ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE BEEN READING MY POSTS ARE MISSING THE POINT....MEMPHIS TRAFFIC ISN'T THE WORST IN THE US; HOWEVER, WITH THE CONTINUED BUILDING THAT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS NO END IN SITE, THE TRAFFIC IS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE EVERY YEAR.....DEVELOPERS NEED TO TAKE RESPONSABILITY FOR ALL OF THE BUILDING AND MONEY-MAKING THEY ARE DOING....IT IS BEGINNING TO GET OUT OF CONTROL.....AND WITH THE URBAN SPRAWL, THE TOWNS WHICH WERE PROBABLY NICE SMALL TOWNS, HAVE COMPLETELY LOST THAT FEEL.....IT DOESN'T HELP THAT BUILDERS ARE BUILDING HOMES OVER 4000 SQUARE FEET ON "ZERO" LOTS!
DON'T YOU WANT TO SLOW DOWN THE GROWTH AND GET SOME CODES IN PLACE?
