phillyindy, i have to disagree w/ you about your statement concerning memphis and nashville. i don't think in the least that memphis, by and large, has any desire or need to compete w/ nashville. i think that memphis has an attitude that is is what it is, in its own world, marches to its own beat, on its own time, does its own thing, and likes it that way, regardless of what other cities think or do. nashville, on the other hand, has always had the desire to be an atlanta, new york city, or los angeles, but it just will never be so. as a collective, by and large, the area has always been jealous of memphis, and, in fact, of any city that steals the "stepchild's" glory. the stuart smalley of american cities. nashville is a large town center with sprinklings of suburban towns around it. memphis is urban, and that makes all the difference. memphis has always had an identity as a city, and nashville is a bit schizoid about what it wants to be this week.

i think the new thing is refocusing its image as a river town, now that it has a pedestrian bridge over the cumberland river. i guess they have gotten tired of seeing the batman building as their premier landmark. as for memphis, i would like to see it take a few clues from parts of seattle and maybe san diego and chicago.

I agree. I was talking to my friend that is a transplant who is always saying that locals think that they have a better city and they are better than people are in memphis. Memphians could care less about nashville or nashvillians.

yes yes, and that same insular attitude combined with an obvious false ego, keeps Memphis exactly where it is..

competition is good for everybody, everywhere...we live and thrive by intelligent comparisons, we compare environments, quality of air, quality of schools, quality of food, quality of government, etc

comparisons are a good thing, that's how we know 'good from evil' for instance, or 'best from bad'

there is nothing wrong with comparisons made ! that how we become better people, better citizens, and I'm sure that Memphis can learn from many many many other cities, and perhaps Nashville might learn something from Memphis, about what to do, and what not to do

Memphis should clearly CARE about Nashville, it's the governmental capital of the State of Tennessee for heavens sake. Dismissing what people do in Nashville, or what the government does in Nashville (or Knoxville, or Chatt) seems wron-headed and a bit crazily arrogant with no existing basis to be so.

Nashvillians don't seem that narrow to me, but that's my opinion based on my business interactions.

Memphis can, and should learn and grow by examining SUCCESSFUL cities across the US....nothing wrong with that

Citizens of Nashville are just people, but they get exposed to a lot of hype and bravada thru local media. Most who can't tune out the hype regurgitate the same verbatim stuff we've heard for years and for obvious reasons, 9 times out of 10 it's always directed at Memphis. Just like the last post, misinformed folks always think that Nashville has something to teach Memphis, but little do they realize Memphis has been there before them. The small urban core of Nashville is easily managed compared to a larger urban core like Memphis. But now Nashville has crept up into the highest crime rate metros, its' school system is becoming notorious and other problems are coming home to roost. What I usually tell my friends in Nashville is that they are where Memphis was about 40 years ago and to get ready for a wild ride with major urban problems that are now just starting to come to the surface there.

again, i think the best test of my reality about nashville came when relatives, who had never visited the area, arrived and stepped off the plane. i will never forget the looks, the questions, and the disappointment. they could not understand why they had such misconceptions of the size of the city. i explained, as best i could, and the next day i showed them what the whole of nashville encompassed. they haven't returned since. i told them about the metro council vote to consider english/spanish as a second language. that was a true "nashbite". a city of the south trying to decide if it should adopt english over spanish as a primary language.

This has gotten way too childish and the vile sputum being spit on this site sure isn't coming from us. This has gone from a rather fun exchange to acrid stupidity. Have a nice life, Westies. No need to comment, I won't check it. Slam me if you will. Ta ta.

Well, we're not on the Nashville forum are we? Anything said in Memphis' defense is "vile sputum". Plus, you didn't say anything worth slamming.
