Question Narcissism on the Rise: The major cause of all our stress in recent times?

Narcissism Epidemic: Why There Are So Many Narcissists Now - US News and World Report

It seems that in today's society, and not only in America, there is an unprecedented rise in the level of competitiveness and likewise an overall disconnected culture. Could the rise in narcissism be the main cause behind our problems (not only our relationships)? I was hoping we could have a constructive discussion about this prevalent issue!

You can thank unfettered capitalism, communism (statism), and religiosity for that. Collectivism breeds narcissism. I noticed severe and profound narcissism in the USA since the early 90s. It's been brewing in the USA for a long time. It's only getting worse with all of America's favorite but antiquated paradigms and systems that are ruining the culture. Thank you for posting the links. It's important for people to be aware of this and take action to improve the culture one step at a time.

I like this quote because it shows that narcissists are not the only people on this planet.

Quote:
Narcissists aren't any more successful than anybody else.
Do they cause stress in other people lives? Yes, if they are allowed to.

No surprise there. You can look to Facebook for one example of this. Not to bash FB and its users, but I've seen my share of FB pages which are basically someone with 1,000+ "friends" and hundreds of photos of themselves in various poses. Their pages scream "look at me, look at me"! They aren't interested in anything anyone posts on their wall unless of course it's about them. Doesn't make them a bad person, I've got friends with these sort of pages. I guess it's better than hating yourself.

In fairness to FB, I'm sure this same phenomenon would have taken place 40 years ago if the technology existed.

Personally I hate Facebook. And I know it's unpopular to say, but I just can't stand exactly what you describe here. The constant updates, posting so many pics, etc. It just rubs me the wrong way. I do believe it's contributing to the narcissism we're seeing these days.

Narcissist: Enough about me. Let's talk about you. What do you think of me?

yeah occasionally narcissists do ask about you but when they do it's stomach turning:

"so what have YOU been doing with your life" (with a little hint of annoyance that they had to ask and you don't want to answer them anyway by that point)

I think the root of this is the way parents spoil their children, buy them everything, never make them take responsibility for anything and basically molly-coddle them all their lives. I see countless 30 year olds living at home, few of whom have EVER had a freakin' job in their lives. This would never have happened in prior generations. Generally kids turned 18 and unless they went on to college, their parents showed them the door. At the very least, they paid their parents room and board.

This whole mindset of "kids first" is the biggest BS. What have children earned to deserve this elevation in status? Why not "Vets first" or "Adults first?"

Haha. Good one ^ .

Seriously - I find the amount of narcissism evident in the Relationships forum here at C-D appalling. The threads are replete with ramblings of narcissistic people who don't have a clue that they're not the center of the universe.
