Your son needs professional psychiatric care. I understand that he is an adult and you can't make him go to the doctor, and I also understand that you're afraid for him. But you are not in a position to treat what sounds like it could be an acute psychotic episode.
My son wasn't diagnosed until he was in his 20's & tried to commit suicide. He was put in the mental health unit for, I think, 5 days & I went to NAMI meetings & also meetings at the hospital.
They would get him stabilized but his medications had to be changed periodically. He was okay for quite a while. Then he & his girlfriend got pregnant & things were okay but he didn't have a high paying job & she kept pushing him.
They finally separated but she'd always managed his medication & he did not do well on his own. I with I'd paid more attention to what he was on but they'd been together 5 years & I'd stepped back.
He ended up hearing the voices again & they apparently told him to set himself on fire. Somehow he survived & even lived for 11 years afterwards. Between the pain pills, diabetes & psychotic meds, his body eventually just gave up.
That will be a year ago on January 11th. He was 44.
I don't want to depress you but if I had to do it over I would have tried to keep up on what meds he had to take. At the same time, I had to be respectful of his privacy & his marriage.
I was going to say same as tangelag schizo.
Our daughter broke down at around 35 when we lost our son to a brain tumor at age 30,a happy man with the Denver Police Dept.
As for help, unless you are wealthy you are up against a stone wall, all you hear is she is of age and has her rights,we did not nor would not assume her liability, when she was finally admitted to Meridian Health Care, she was stabilized for several years.
To make long story short, her downfall came when Medicare C came, they discharged her to outpatient in apartment which she was not capable of handling.Medicare C took her off Medicaid, from there all down hill.
Her meds were expensive and she was unwilling to cooperate.
When they go off meds it takes several months to stabilize. The hospital gave up after several episodes.
Our 25 year old son talked to himself about 5 years ago in our kitchen. He was having a conversation with someone who wasn't there. He was not on drugs. Seriously, he wasn't. I spoke with him about it and all I got was he does that as an escape but he wouldn't elaborate. And knowing his fragile state, I didn't press it.
I do that also......... Spirits around me can hear me (My guardian angel, etc)
Im sorry he had a breakdown..... I hope he is gonna be ok 100% again
One behavior happened once that I saw, 5 years ago
