Xanax isn't a sleeping pill. It's a sedative, that some physicians will prescribe off-label to aid in sleeping. It promotes drowsiness, but isn't known to be effective in deep sleep.
Ambien is not a sedative, it's a sleeping pill. It is not prescribed responsibly off-label for anything; it is exclusively a sleep aid. It doesn't merely cause drowsiness; it promotes a deep sleep.
Benadryl is an antihistimine, that is commonly used off-label to cause drowsiness, since that happens to be a side effect.
If you can't fall asleep *even when you are drowsy already* then Ambien would be the most appropriate of the above three.
If you can't get drowsy when you need to be, Benadryl is pretty fast-acting and non-addictive nor habit-forming.
If you can't get drowsy because of anxiety, OR because you take day-time meds that give you the jitters (such as certain SSRIs), then Xanax is the most appropriate of the above three.
Three completely different medications, used for different concerns.
Everyone is different and for me working nightshift and job is stressfull so Ambien helped alot compared with lying in bed w/mind racing and anxiety building instead of being able to rest and sleep. Body becomes used to it where it had opposite effect almost and have to take not 5mg but the full 10mg. Between wife and I we had other meds to help also but must be very careful mixing! Especially alcohol dont drink at all when on other prescriptions. Same line of work but new place and provider gave me some Xanax 2 mths worth and they help alot and Ive been careful. Supposed to be at bedtime but have taken 0.5mg earlier as anxiety was near panic attacks and it like calmed the racing thoughts.
