It is typically utilized as an atypical antidepressant. The ability to aid in smoking cessation is due to it acting as a nicotinic antagonist. However, it is a prescription medication.

I have lots of paitents who have had great success with Chantix - also rx but seems to work wonders! some folks have side effects from wellbutrin such as nightmares and general pain and aches - on the plus side, wellbutrin can also improve weightloss and decrease appetite in some folks - Chantix is another great option for those wanting to kick the habbit

Well, let me trade in my Prozac for Wellbutrin......last time I took it I lost a lot of weight, now I'm 50 and I think my body sees it as just another bunch of calories to turn to fat.....
Mimosa, thanks for the words of encouragement - I am trying SO hard to work up the nerve to quit!

I am starting my second week of Wellbutrin. My doc prescribed it for me to help quit smoking. It has made the cigs taste like crap. I am down to a little less than half of what I was smoking. I plan to be totally off by the end of my second week. I will try to update this as I go through the process..

I got off cigarettes using an e-cigarette. You can get tobacco flavors or other well known flavors. My favorite right now is root beer float. Just might help keep the extra pounds off too! There is a forum for everything and this too: E-Cigarette Forum

The problem with those "e-cigarettes" is that you're trading one form of nicotine with another. If you're addicted to nicotine, e-cigarettes won't get you off the addiction. While it isn't the nicotine that causes cancer, it is the substance that smoking addicts are addicted to. There isn't enough research to determine what kind of long-term effects, if any, result from inhaline pure nicotine fumes over an extended period of time. I wouldn't risk it.

Well then you wouldn't risk coughing less, not smelling like smoke, and all of the other 4,000 chemicals that are in cigarettes to try an e-cig? Really? If you are a smoker and do your research you will find which is safest. The liquid that burns in an e-cigarette is all 100% safe for inhalation and FDA approved too. And as far as your comment about not getting off the nicotine addiction, again do some research before you make such comments...nicotine can be added according to one's preference and can be stepped down just like a nicotine patch! See I did my research!
