It isn't science and it offers no cure.

Not all fields of medicine offer a cure. Sometimes the best you can do is treatment and managment.

Those doctors have an axe to grind and are not credible sources for a balanced view. And the ohrer doctors are answering a specific question and their quotes are taken out of context.

Tread carefully with this--especially with children. Once you get in, you can't get out unless they sign your walking papers, or if your insurance runs out!

If you decide to seek "care" for yourself or a loved one, you can do so at your initiation, but if you decide to stop "care" all they have to do in the case of a child is seek a court order (which is simple to do) that you're medically neglient. You can have your child taken from you, placed in foster care, forced to continue 'treatment" which usually consists of expensive drugs, and you will be charged for all of the above, even if you lack insurance, if you have any resources, even a 401k that will be taken for "proper treatment".

If you're an adult and decide to stop any "care" you initiated, they can declare you a "danger to yourself and/or others" and have you committed. Trust me, I've known two such tragic cases.

What marylee says is absolutely true.
However... even though much of psychiatry is crap, that doesn't mean there aren't good people out there, who also happen to be good psychiatrists, who actually help people.

Who posted this, Tom Cruise on behalf of Scientology? Do we really want to go back to the 50s when no one got any kind of psychological care, or if they did have to go to a psychiatrist it was a shameful thing to be hidden? Please...

Psychiatry in the end is just a tool of social control. the definitions of mental health and mental illness are too subjective for objective medical fact.

These people are full of bunk. You can look at a brain scan of a person who has bipolar disease, severe depression, schizophrenia and look at their behavior before medication and after medication and see the differences. It is true, it is in some ways a preparadigmatic science, but all science is in some ways, what works for one patient, may not work for others. In addition, many forms of talk thearpy work. Those statistics are available.

What he said ^^

I was trying to figure out how to address this, but you did it quite nicely for me.

Near as I can tell, when I go in with a cough and lung pain annually, my Dr. says it's pre-bronchitis and gives me an antibiotic. He doesn't do any official tests. Nonetheless, it works.
