What do you do, and how often do you feel this way? what normally makes you feel this way? (when, why, etc)
I tell myself that "life is short" but this isn't much of a consolation either, knowing that I don't really believe in an afterlife.

I've noticed also that deep, philosophical thinking in this manner does not lead to any answers
Or has it for someone on CD forum...

Deep, philosophical thinking will only bring you down further. Stay away from it.

I find what's best to do when you feel this way is to figure out more about who you are.

Finding a new passion does WONDERS. Is there something you've always wanted to try, but never have? Painting? Skiing? Pottery making? Salsa dancing?

You need to seize the day and start DOING instead of moping. I know it's going to be tough at first, but it works. Jump back into life. It's not much fun sitting on the sidelines.

When I don't drink I don't get depressed. Stay away from all drugs/alcohol. Exercise and healthy diet work wonders. Finding a useful way to contribute to society doesn't hurt either.

Ditto on the drinking and drugs. The constant highs and lows are not good for really anyone.

I feel this way more than I would like to. It can be a symptom of ADD, in my case anyway. Don't know the rhyme or reason as to why it pops up when it does. I usually go work out. I like being around other people, even if not actually socializing with them.

If I've already done that, maybe go for a walk to help clear my mind and get those thoughts out.

When you start to feel this way you must act quickly, before it gets worse.

You have to physically get up and get busy - go work out, take a run, find a way to be useful to someone else - just stop thinking so much about YOURSELF.

Oh yeah one more thing. Do not attempt to fill that void or depressed feeling with another person. They will always disappoint somewhere down the road and you will then feel terrible. Unhappy people should never be in relationships but unfortunately most people only feel complete in one, which is just part of the reason why the divorce rate is beyond retarded.

If deep thoughts make you sad...You have not finished the thought or looked at it from all perspectives.

That's the problem.... the thought never ends, sometimes it even goes in circles. Even if it doesn't go in circles, the conclusions are less than satisfying. Let me ask you then, what conclusions have you come across?
