While I think they're cool, and actually own quite a few, I have a hard time w/ dream dictionaries!

A lot of the time I just can't find the right words to fit the context of the dreams themselves..

Ok, I had a weird one this morning. I dreamed that I was looking through old family photos and found one of me at the age of about 2 sitting on my Dad's lap facing him and had a hold of two fists of very long hippie hair. My Dad has always kept his hair very short. I woke up and there was a 70's music infomercial on TV . Hmmm. I'm also fighting bronchitis right now, so I could've totally been delirious from fever.

Have you seen "Inception"?

But, dreams DO have meaning. It is your brain trying to work through problems and make sense of the world while you are sleeping. We require dreams for proper brain functioning. Now, having said that, I'm not into the whole psychic hocus-pocus aspect of dream interpretation. But, I do think it's interesting.

You call that "making sense" of the world? I think it might be just the opposite. We are both wired and trained to constantly form thoughts into logical patterns. Sleep is when we rest all of our faculties, including that one, and don't need to do that.

Huh? Have you even done any studies in sleep? Or are you just forming your own opinion? There has been brain research that shows the brain working and problem-solving all through the sleep period. They have done brain scans on people sleeping that shows critical-thinking areas of the brain working extra hard at night. I'm no neurologist, but I have at least watched some PBS and various other nerd channels that have all said the same thing.

I have studied symbology and other related subjects for many years and what I know is that dream dictionaries are not worth much.
There are some typical dreams like teeth falling out or no steering/breaks in a car- and those are fairly universal. But specific dream symbols and thier meaning cannot be accurately found in a dream dictionary.
We all have our very own personal dream symbolism.
Learning what those symbols mean takes recording your dreams and reflection upon them.
Not everyone is afraid or snakes and spiders so to dream of a spider does not mean the dream is telling you of some fear is you like spiders.

I have heard that when we dream of the dead, it's often our way of coming to terms with things, or possibly even them making contact with us...

Any thoughts?

i do believe in dream meanings and that maybe at certain periods in your life dreams may have a certain specific meaning.years ago i had some pretty bad habits and i had a dream of a dead relative who had succumbed to the same habits.i literally woke up in a sweat it scared me so bad and to this day i think it was a dream basically telling me to straighten up or i'll be gone.
