I've been wrestling with the idea of purchasing my first Mercedes in the next few months. I am looking at a base GLC300 with just a few add-ons. I've always loved German cars, and understand their need for to-the-letter maintenance intervals. I've owned a number of older (pre-1991) BMWs over the years and they have always treated me well. I spend a lot of time grinding it out in traffic and want something comfortable.
I generally keep my cars for a while and have concerns about long term reliability. I've read this has improved in the last decade, but wanted to hear some thoughts from those who purchased in the last few years?
I was seriously considering a MB but the GLE and in the end decided against it due to seeing so many MB coming to the service department when I was at the dealership with my Lexus getting the car wash.
I'm not a BMW person but I would choose BMW over MB, however I ended up getting another Lexus as no other brand can beat it's reliability.
Owned both BMW's (sedans) and Mercedes (SUV). Very happy with the MB. Best driving and trip cars I have ever had. One gas and one diesel (3.0L gets 30mpg at 78mph on a trip).
The Chrysler years were not good for MB. However, that partnership is long over, and the new designs, features, and reliability are a return to the MB of old. Between my family, friends, and myself, we have S550's, E550's, E63's, GLE class, SL class, and CLS class cars, with the oldest being a 2009 S class. They've all been nearly flawless.
BMW reliability is the worst in the business, no one in their right mind would choose one over a MB unless you were just a brand enthusiast.
I was thinking about getting a CLS 63 but I got a BMW M3 instead, not a huge fan of German cars I like Italian cars better but I did not want to pay 200k for a sports car.
I had a 2002 CLK430 coupe. Was a pretty good car, the engine was bulletproof, had a few electrical gremlins that were annoying. Sometimes the sunroof wouldn't open or close, other times the power seats wouldn't adjust. Only major repair I had was the hydraulic pump for the suspension went out. Very common. Replaced with regular Bilstein shocks/struts.
