I've had a '76 300D for a few months. Occasionally, I would start it up, get moving, and the first time I went to get moving I'd hear a loud metallic screech. The sound is not as high-pitched as a belt slipping, but it went away after the first launch so I ignored it. Well, now the problem has abruptly gotten worse, doing it at every launch and any time I put my foot in it, in multiple different gears. What could this be? Whatever it is, I'm about done with this car.. I'm ready to scrap it and take it off the road for good.

Maybe it is a slipping belt, Sonarrat.

Those old Mercedes Diesels are tough machines. A simple and cheap fix to rule out a belt squeal . . . try rubbing a cake of soap on the belts. If that either stops or at least helps a little, new belts should do it.

Good Luck

If it was a belt slipping, wouldn't I hear it while idling and not only when it was moving?

Not necessarily . . . if only slightly loose or worn, it may only slip when there is a load on the system.

The soap did nothing. Any other ideas? It seems to be alternating between a high pitched belt squeak and a low pitched metallic grind/screech.

Looks like the question answered itself as the car was dead as a doornail this morning. Good thing I live close to public transportation. :X

I'm self employed but can't write it off if I get rid of it before January 1 so I'll have to open my wallet and get the alternator replaced.
