I stay away form the brands owned by famous people like rock stars and such. They are rich enough ! I don't really look for brands as they are all very good Tequilas if they are made with 100% agave. Most folks agree that the older versions are sippers and the cheaper reposados and silvers make good mixers. Just look on the label for the words "puro" or "100% de agave". And remember that Tequila is a mescal that is made in or near the town of Tequila, all the rest of the mescal spirits must be called mescal under Mexican law. Here is my famous "little Margie" recipe: (You can use mescal for this if it's good puro mescal)

Hand squeeze a boat load of key limes, strain out the pulp and infuse with honey to desired sweetness.
Mix in a drink mixing shaker - one part sweetened lime juice with one part Cointreau.
( don't use cheap triple sec as it contains crappy grain alcohol) Using the better ingredients helps prevent hangover.
Add one and one half parts Tequila de puro (100% agave). Either aged or un-aged it's up to your taste !
Add small ice cubes and shake for 1 minute.
Pour into little prepared and chilled cocktail glasses.
To prep the glasses just with the rims with a lime peel and coat with Kosher coarse salt.
I only coat half of the rim with salt. Always turn the salted glassed upside down and wipe the excess salt from the inside of the rim so you don't end up with a little pile of salt in the bottom of the glass.
Put your car keys in a time lock safe please !

I don't know what best really means anymore ! I just think that if you enjoy it, that's best enough for me ! I like to sip on a good Margarita while munching on a Roast beef Mexican Torta. The kind made from a Bolillo roll, with refried beans spread on one half and Guacamole on the other, A big pile of spicy fall apart beef, some pico de gallo and a nice splash of hot sauce. Ya all hungry yet ?

Yes Quesadillas made with fresh meltable Quesa Mexicana and a sprinkle of cotilla cheese served with Grilled shrimp, chips , salsa and quacamole. With Sauza Hornitos Reposado to wash it all down with.

Default Mezcal vs Tequila

I decided to look this up because my understanding is different on this. Wiki supports this view, which surprised me. While it is technically correct, it doesn't capture the real difference between them, which is that mezcal is distilled from smoked agave (giving it a much stronger earthy taste) where tequila is distilled from baked agave where it's steamed. The taste difference between tequila and mezcal is distinct, and unmistakable in my opinion.

Here's an entry I feel is more accurate:
Quote:
While traditionally, all tequilas were known as a type of mezcal. Today, they are distinct products, differentiated by the production process and taste, much the same way rye whisky differs from Scotch whiskey. ... To make mezcal, the sugar-rich heart of the agave called the piña, is baked in a rock-lined pit oven over charcoal, and covered with layers of palm-fiber mats and earth, giving mezcal a strong, smoky flavor. Tequila piñas are baked or steamed in aboveground ovens or autoclaves.

As a mezcal fan, I had to note that little technicality. But good solid information offered in your post on the subject.

Herradura Reposado gets my vote ... I served it at a few after-dinner pre-club parties for my coworkers and they really appreciated it. We usually drink it freezing cold, with no lime or salt. By the way, no hangover.

Since I live in the states and can't get the real good local stuff, my favorites so far are Patron Silver and Don Julio.
