Default Do "white" Mexicans look down on indigenous looking people?

Ex: If your light skinned daughter brought home a dark-skinned boyfriend, would there be a problem with that?

Cool I know something about this

As one who is married to a guera Altena of French/Galician heritage, I can speak to this with some authority

Mexico is basically divided by class. For example at a prestigious Tec de Monterrey campus, if you look around there are Mexicans of all stripes. All students are children of upper-middle class to extreme-upper class; Indios to Blancos.

If you are out and about in los Altos de Jalisco where our family is from, there are wealthy from moreno to blanco also. However, there are many from the ranchos who are poor who are so Guero they look like they are from Sweden. You can see this on Sundays when these families come to the plazas; blue eyes, white blond hair, tall all dressed up in wranglers and cowboy hats for their trip to the plaza.

In our family representation, there are extreme gueras to moreno claros. My nephews seem to be more interested in gueras for sure than darker morenas; just personal preference.

I doubt it would cause too much uproar in the family if one of these boys brought a beautiful morena home, just as long as she was from the correct socio-economic class.

I found it insightful into the Mexican psyche when at Christmas my niece who has blue eyes/blond hair (think Julianne Hough) said 'we are all Mestizos'

This much is true. In Mexico, class and sociat status is more important than just skin color. Although it doesn't hurt to be light skinned... in many upper-class social circles throughout the country there are dark and light skinned people.

To answer the question... do light skinned Mexicans look down on indigenous. YES... but only if they're rich white mexicans and they look down on EVERYONE... not like the rest of us, the gueros from the rancho like me. LOL!

And your nice is absolutely right. Even white white mexicans... if they have roots in mexico dating back to 500 yrs, theyre more than likely mestizo.

How do you know that? Have you met and gotten to know every rich Mexican of European descent?

you don't need to...it's actually part of the culture. Try to approach a rich Mexican of any color, and see how receptive they are to being friends with someone of a lower class than themselves.

I agree. It is not do white Mexicans look down on indigenous looking people but more of do white, rich Mexicans look down on indigenous looking people. Because as far as white, they can also be found in what would be considered the poor class.
You know, come to think about it, no wonder we are so addicted to novelas. It seems like it is always the rich, white guy who falls in love w/the poor (usually) white servant or something along those lines, and we all root for their love to become a reality because when it comes to differences in economic status, it is more difficult for a relationship to start or even last.

If some in the poorer classes from Mexico are "white", then why are so many of the illegals "mestizo"? If you go to any day labor camp in so calif, you really don't come across anyone that looks whitey white. Are the poorer whites just merely content to live in mexico and not venture to "el norte"?

Many immigrants from Mexico are not totally destitute? Maybe they were originally, but through hard work ethic some have attained middle or upper class. This is evident in the 'white' Mexican enclaves in the SF Bay area. You wouldn't even know if you were looking at a Mexican most of the time unless you asked them where they were from.

I have seen a few 'white' Mexicans here in Oregon; however, I had no idea they were Mexican until they opened their mouth.

My wife suprises even Mexicans, because they think she is a gringa or russa until she talks

Moorhen: Why do folks seem to put so much sociological stock in telenovelas? They are entertainment, not to be taken so seriously
