I think it's about $90 USD in tolls from Guadalajara to Laredo one way. The toll roads are never crowded because they are so expensive. Gasoline right now is a little less than in the U.S. but that's not always the case. It's expensive to drive in Mexico. Those who don't want to fly should take the Executive Buses that are roomier and more comfortable than an airline first class seat with TV, etc., and cheaper than driving or flying.

I've driven all over Mexico and I never use the toll roads. The Libre roads are quite adequate, and not often overly busy, although there are some that are pretty bad, like Tepic-Puerto Vallarta.

For me, getting from one place to another is a part of the travel experience that I am in Mexico for in the first place, but if all you want to do is arrive at a destination, then the Cuotas will be one of the costs you need to face up to.

It's also a safety issue and right now everyone is being told to stay on the toll roads. Also it depends on how much it costs for front end parts that you will need after bouncing for a few miles at a time. I made the mistake on the way down here of taking the librementes and with my school bus (Suburban) it was very rough roads with a truck, the roads went through almost every village with their too narrow streets and it wasn't the safest thing for a lone driver to do. Right now until the troubles are over, going native is not that safe.

Not to mention all the topes in those villages, sometimes built as curbs camouflaged to blend in with the road itself...

The cuota bypasses around cities are time savers although in some cases like the city of SLP the freeway through town is good road with limited access so I see no point in the bypass.
