A Notario is a lawyer with additional training and appointed by the state's governor. It is a coveted position and has more responsibility than a regular lawyer. Only a Notario can write a Will or close a Real Estate sale.

Sites by Rolly I forgot to add that have the best information about moving to Mexico. Rolly lives in Northern Mexico and I'm sure he wouldn't advice anyone to move to his area right now. There is little to no trouble in areas like San Miguel Allende, Lake Chapala and others. We have less crime and far less violence than in any major city in Texas.

Hola Nancy,

I live in Rosarito Beach, Baja California, Mexico, so first off... Welcome/Benvenidos!

Many folks live here on Social Security in the income neighborhood you describe. Of course, everyone has their own lifestyle, so you may get a lot of opinions. The first decision will be how much you are going to spend for housing. I have friends who rent cute, small houses or apartments in Mexican neighborhoods for $300 and up. Currently, with a city population of about 190,000 approximately 14,000 to 10% of the city is foreign residents. Many will cash out in the US or where ever they are coming from and buy something here... and there is a wide variety of housing opportunities available. More "Americanized" housing will cost more... probably in the area of $500 and up.

There are many singles who have found a friend to live with and split expenses... so after you get here you may well find a companion to share a home and life. I guess that some folks think it is only rich retirees who come here and buy luxury condos... but that's not true. People of all strata and backgrounds come here to retire.

You will hear from many sides saying that it is too dangerous to live in Mexico... but all I can say is that I'm pretty active here and I don't know a single person who has been involved or affected by any of the drug cartel violence. Not one. Certainly not one tourist or foreign resident. That does not mean that we live in a crime free paradise... crime does occur... but just the same as it occurs in any place... perhaps even less than Fort Worth! Like anyplace... if you don't look for trouble, you don't find it.

I suggest you come here and rent short term for a while before deciding exactly which area is best for you. Some places you can walk to the market, to downtown shops, cafes, etc. You will be able to check things out and decide for yourself before taking anything long-term.

Take a look at: www.facebook.com/vivarosarito for some links to the events, and other sites which will help you. There are many civic organizations for the foreign resident... United Society of Baja California theater guild, Friends of the Library, and more social events than you can possibly participate in.

One thing is absolutely for sure... you can live here on $1,300.00 a month safer and more enjoyably than many other places. Let me know if you need more information.

~K

This is a site that can give you an idea about rentals in any area. Remember that most are listed in Pesos not Dollars so $5000 MX is about $400 US, not $5000 US.

This link is to Ensenada which can have Rosarito Beach listings:

You can join IMSS,( Mexican Medicare,) for about $300 a year and it covers 100% of medical, hospitals and medicine. Most people use the local doctors who charge from $5 to $35 for an office visit. IMSS is for emergencies and hospitalization for most of us. You will not hear foreigners complain about Mexican doctors. Even Canadians pay for treatment here rather than get their free care in Canada.

I'm from Texas and not being in the heat is wonderful. We don't need air-conditioning or heaters most of the year. On hot days in March and April when it can hit 90, I use my portable swamp cooler and fans. The houses here are built with all mortar like castles are built, all stone so they stay cool.
Great advice!! We love Chapala - and if we didn't still also have a house in the states, we'd buy there for the late summer to late fall months when the Vallarta area heat is so brutal. Lake Chapala just has a wonderful feel about it and people are so accomodating and friendly - plus the views and restaurants are great and the lakeside towns all have their own special character. {Maybe we'll get there in another life..}

Default Living in Rosarito Beach..

I am interested in living in Rosarito Beach. I found your post extremely informative. Your facebook URL does not work- but you can Direct message me, if you want.

What is the taxi fare from the tijuana border point to Rosarito?

I wanted to put together a share of a few successful professionals and rent the best that can be rented for $700 per bedroom or $2800 for a very nice villa.

Sharing a 4 bedroom condo can work very well. If you get a very good deal, and have 4 people sharing it can work very well. Usually, people do not stay in a second home all the time- living you with plenty of privacy and space.

I want to furnish it very nicely.

On a map it looks like the distance is less than 20 miles from the border so a cab would probably be less than $25 USD.

For rentals try this site. It has property managers, private individuals and real estate companies listed so contacting them might find you a place also. Remember the rent is usually stated in pesos ( MXP,) not USD. Think of $10,000 being $800 USD.

VivaStreet Resultados de tu Búsqueda (http://tinyurl.com/66mxkca - broken link)

I'm adding these a 5 bed/4 bath beach front fully furnished for $2000 a mo. http://tinyurl.com/4wdaqf8 (broken link)

There are two others on that site that are beautiful and rent for less but they are not beach front. Houses rent for less there than in the Chapala area for an equal house.

Moderator cut: personal remarks

A route taxi from TJ to Rosarito is just over $1 US.

I have driven thru Jalisco many times but would never espound any knowledge of the area.

Lived in Mexico City for three yrs and drove all over the city during that time but still would not give too much info on the place.

I'm now 15 yrs 10 miles south of Rosarito and can now say Ive a little knowledge of the area. Built my own home here (no castle) that blends in with the neighborhood.

Some Americans should get off their high horse as Mexico for the most part is a nice place to retire and live for all the average people that desire a quiet atmosphere.

Is this correct?

From Tijuana to Rosarito it's 33 kilometers or about 20.5 miles.
Amazing that a cab is $1 to travel that far.

I've met people in Mexico who have actually traveled and lived in other areas of Mexico other than where they are currently living. Yes, it is unheard of but it happens.

People can also look up distances on the internet. They don't have to physically travel a distance to know how far it is from point A to point B.

If someone has spent time in an area and can't give any information about the area I would be doubtful about getting any information from him about anything.
