Since in Thailand you need to be married to Thai citizen or need to invest a ton of money on some sort of business to buy land, I thought what was the criteria you have to meet to buy land in Mexico. I was thinking about buying land in southern Mexico close to Guatemala.

I think for Ecuador non-citizens can buy land, right?

US citizens can buy and hold real estate in Mexico in their own name except in the coastal zone where title is held by a fideicomiso. (A trust). Title insurance is also available as in the US.

Fideicomiso - Bank Trust - Real Estate Trust

There are hundreds of thousands of US folks, I'd venture who own coastal land in Mexico using the safe and secure bank trust sytem. I'm one and I know many, many others from the US and Canada who own property here.

You can buy land anywhere in Mexico and I think recently it was changed so that foreigners can buy land in their name near the border and on the coasts. Buying in the interior is not a problem at all.
