Go to Veracruz or Acapulco. One of the most beautiful woman I've ever seen had obviously African roots and was from Acapulco. Think Halle Berry.

Mestizo means mixed race, you will find the descendents of the slaves and others there -- the large eyes, fuller lips, broader noses. For the most part those of African descent have blended into the general population. Centuries ago.

What "helps" to keep a separate black race going in the USA was segregation and the one drop rule used in the USA. Many blacks in the USA are actually mestizo also, mixed African, white, Asian, Cherokee for example.

I did notice I hardly saw any African or Ah-Amer. in Mexico, of course with exception of border areas. In my husbands town as matter of fact I have never seen any race but Mex or Mex-Amer.

In larger towns of husbands(Morelia) I saw many Asians and French but no African.

Is there a city or area where Black expatriates or retirees live?

I don't know how many African-Americans from the USA retire to Mexico, but the most popular retirement areas, generally, are: Baja California, Puerto Vallarta, the Lake Chapala communities, Merida and probably Mexico City. I know, in particular, one African-American from New Jersey who retired to Acapulco. He says he feels very comfortable there ... given the influence of Afro-Mestizos who have a similar skin tone.

One that comes to mind quickly, when thinking of a beach "town close to Mexico City" when traveling by bus and not by airplane is Zihuatanejo, Guerrero. To live in Mexico one is required to obtain government permission and demonstrate a certain level of consistent monthly income.

African American poet Langston Hughes lived in Mexico with his father for while. His father was an expatriate from a distinguished African American family. I am not sure if any biographies exist on his father that mention the exact location in Mexico where he lived .

Here's some information:

Quote:
Langston Hughes is often referred to as the "Poet Laureate of the Negro Race." He was born in Joplin, Missouri February 1, 1902. He grew up in Lawrence Kansas and Lincoln, Illinois before going to high school in Cleveland, Ohio, and spending a year in Mexico near Mexico City.
