So I think Columbia and Panama would be two good bets for me this coming fall/winter/spring. They are cheaper than most of the Caribbean Islands. Dominican Republic may be one relatively affordable Caribbean spot though. Places like the Bahamas and Barbados seem really expensive for lodging (I might as well go to Hawaii vs. those places since it's closer to San Diego).
Deezus...what beachy parts of Columbia do you like? You also mentioned Loreto MX, what are your thoughts on that as a winter getaway? That is a lot closer to me since I live in San Diego CA.

If you want not so developed, but not too hard to get to go to Costa Rica's Caribbean side. Reasonably priced and fairly safe, although like Mexico keep your head about you as there are drug trade characters around. And if you want cheap package island paradise you can go to San Andres which is Colombian, but mostly filled with Costa Rican tourists and a very quick flight away. Best of both worlds when it comes to Caribbean vacation and lots of flights available to San Jose from where you can access both easily.

Thanks Willy702. I hand't been thinking much about Costa Rica since everyone says it's overrun with Gringo tourists, but the Caribbean side might be worth a look. I'll try to find that Island you're talking about on a map.

I was in Puerto Escondido just a week ago. It is a nice cheap laid back area, and there really isn't much to do if you aren't a surfer. There are a couple of smaller beaches that are ideal for relaxation and doing nothing. Plus the beers are about $1.40.
I too am looking for the same type of places you are describing ctr88. I am researcing Panama but can't seem to figure out the nest beach areas. I have also been to the Dominican Republic many times, as I have close friends there. I have only been to Sosua and Cabarette, but these aren't touristy places with all-inclusives, so you might like it.
