Default Why are animated features so popular in Mexico?

...among adults?

I have several friends in Mexico. Every time they mention going to see a movie, it always seems to be an animated one: Ice Age 4, Madagascar, The Green Wasp, etc. In the U.S., they are viewed as kids' movies, but in Mexico they seem to be popular with all age groups.

What gives?

Nice question, i really dont know. Also is common that on cinemas, of course you see a lot of complete families, you may see young couples.

I really dont understand, in some way is a form to remember your childhood. In my case when toy story 4 was released a lot of teenagers went to the cinemas, including me.

Those movies are not popular in USA too?

I just see the charts and that indicate that are authentic blockbusters in USA.

The reason adult people go to see this movies is because there is nothing else, usually at the premiere these films occupy almost all the rooms.

You must consider also Mexico is a young country. Many people go with their kids to the movies, so there you have another reason.

Another thing is that those movies are generally well made, so many adults go just for fun.

Apparently in this forum all Mexicans do, is strange or annoying, though in general, mexican behavior is very similar to american.

I would think animated children's pictures are more easily accessible and don't require knowledge of cultural references made in the live-action films of a particular country. Also, Mexicans tend to be very family-oriented, and the animated pictures these days are geared toward both children and adults so everyone can enjoy them. In the US, more adults don't think twice about taking their child to a movie with sex or violence in it, which is unfortunate.

Plenty of adults watch those movies here in Australia, they are not only viewed as kid's movies.

There is another reason you havn't thought about, children's movies are not subtitled but doubled, so when they do this they keep the core of the story but the give the mexican charm to them, take for instance SHREK, I've seen it in English and in Spanish and there is no way you can compare them, in Spanish it is hilarious, in English it's just fun to watch.

Another reason is that we mexicans take life less seriois than americans, and we enjoy everything there is around and we just need a little pretext to make a party out of everything and don't make a fuss out of it.

So these movies always take a laugh or two out of our mouths.

Very interesting.

I know this type of movie is also popular in the U.S., but I do not know many adults who actually go and then rave about it, much less with their partners.

I totally see what you mean about dubbing vs. subtitles; that must be the reason why The Simpsons is so popular in Mexico.

It seems like almost every movie my Mexican friends talk about is an animated one. They don't talk about Amores Perros or El Infierno; they talk about Ice Age and as you mentioned, Shrek.

I've noticed what you described as Mexicans taking life less seriously than Americans and having lower standards / enjoying life in general rather than carving specific niches, too.

Yea in America its considered weird to see kids animated movies like the Pixar or Dreamworks stuff for an adult by himself. A lot of people like those movies but they'll usually not mention to friends that they went to a theater to see it or theyll wait for the on demand/dvd. It's changing with young people since in the time of older people, animation was only for kids, but young people now watch Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park, Boondocks etc so animation doesn't seem as kiddy.
