Myself having been ro Tijuana years ago I thought it was a nice city. Lots of bars, nightlife, partying.

Merida, Yucatan. Very safe, friendly, easy to get around, nearby access to Mayan ruins, nearby beaches, nearby colonial cities, lots of universities and young students, affordable and simply beautiful.

Of the three I've been to - DF, MTY, and TJ, I go w DF hands down. MTY was very nice and very clean. It was far less stress than DF. But DF is one of the biggest cities in the world and has been so for 2000 years. The endless charms and fascinations could keep one busy for years.

I really wanted to get to Merida but DF was just so interesting I couldn't get to it. Yucatan sounds like it would be a nice change of pace. Compared to DF though, Monterrey was a nice hange of pace!

I chose Guadalajara. Colonial mixed in with modern. Beautiful buildings, gardens, houses, parks and churches. Though I haven't visited Cuernavaca yet and only seen the city through pictures and videos this is another gorgeous city as San Miguel Allende is. I'm a huge fan of Saltillo pavers and Talavera tile. Cuernavaca has it everywhere as does Guadalajara. I've visited some enormous haciendas in the outskirts of Guad with Saltillo inside and outside and I about died. Incredible! Can't beat Mexican rustic!!

-Cheers!

San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, or Merida, Yucatan.

Your survey is clearly from an American point of view... three big cities, border town, and beach cities... not that those r bad cities, but there are other, very cool cities within Mexico you leave out.

Chihuahua is actually a pretty legit city, with some pretty good looking people, as is Hermosillo. Guanajuato is in the heart of Mexico's agricultural industry. Puebla has beautiful scenery, Cuernavaca has amazing weather year-round, Oaxaca is a treasure-trove of indigeous culture... Veraruz has a culture of it's own, with it's own accent, music, and caribbean-type culture. Toluca is to DF as NJ is to NYC (ok maybe not the best city)...
