You need to pay a deposit of $200-$400 to drive into Mexico. The deposit is based on the year of the vehicle, $200, $300, $400 refundable if you leave before your permission expires.

It has gotten ridiculous and Mexico will lose tourists and expats.

Look for the 30 days and the 180 day visas. The demands will cool any desire to visit Mexico:

Documento sin título
This is not correct, a tourist arriving in Mexico does not need to bring bank statements.

Imagine the drop in tourism if this was true.

"Oh one other thing that was an annoyance I thought I did get. That was the "Gringo, wait - Mexicans first." Seemed like several times in several places people thought nothing of butting in front of me and the counter help were only too happy to look right through me to help the "other" person."

I can't say I have ever run into this problem (in nearly 20 years "in-country".) If I had, I probably would have said something to the effect, "Hija, hay fila!" Of course, if the person butting into the line was a cholo with a bunch of prison tats, a shaved head, and with a squarish bulge in the back of his shirt, I would probably just keep my big mouth shut.

I think it is rudeness or unawareness. I have told vendors who tried to wait on me that the "Senora" was ahead of me and here first. Mexicans don't usually tell people they were waiting first so they look surprised when I do that.
