So many Americans love Baja Calfornia, but the fact that it is Mexican territory puts a major damper on travel plans to go down there. Simple question: Mexico needs the money; America has the money: why not just buy it from Mexico so it can be properly developed as a grand resort area that is safe, clean and under responsible jurisdiction? As an added bonus we could shut down the area as a major drug trafficking route into the USA.
I live on So Cal and would be travelling down there several times a year were it not for the shabby and crappy third-world conditions one runs into the minute one crosses the border, not to mention the dangers of being accosted, shot or kidnapped.
In The Annexation of Mexico, John Ross writes that the Reagan administration wanted to buy Baja California for $105 billion. The US inflation-adjusted offer for Baja California [would be] in the neighborhood of $200 billion today. That’s $5,580 per acre.
Still hilarious? (now let's watch the hilarious face-saving two-step)
Ive thought about it and while the idea of annexing the Baja California peninsula sounds good in theory the troubles that would come with Tijuana make it not worth it. Tijuana is overrun with drug cartels, corrupt politicians, dirty cops, etc.
The other issue is that all residents would become Americans and they would thus take the opportunity to move elsewhere in the United States and there would be nobody left.

I'm in the process of moving to Tijuana, and haven't felt unsafe at all.
