I'm looking to spend a day/night in some nature somewhere near or between Oaxaca and Veracruz. Google searches aren't yielding much - can anyone recommend some beautiful nature sites to explore in these areas?

Thanks!

The crossing of the mountains between Oaxaca and Veracruz is some backward country mostly inhabited by indigenous people. The Mexican government famously built a dam and flooded some of the ancestral homeland of the people to bring in electric power.

There is a ridge that rises thousands of feet above Oaxaca City, allowing you to ascend to 10,000' in a short car ride. The small villages perched on the ridge encourage mountain bike riding, dining on fresh trout, or simply hiking.

Mountain Biking in Oaxaca, Mexico - WSJ

Huautla de Jiménez is a remote mountain village which was the former home of Maria Sabina who died in 1985.

María Sabina had a massive influence on Western culture . She was native shaman. In 1955, the US ethnomycologist and banker R. Gordon Wasson visited María Sabina's hometown of Huautla de Jimenez, Oaxaca, and participated in a velada (healing ceremony involving the psilocybin mushroom) with her.

He also brought spores of the fungus to Paris. He wrote about the experience for Life Magazine, and the fungus was cultivated in Europe and its active ingredient was duplicated as the chemical psilocybin in the laboratory by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann in 1958.

The Life Magazine article was the single most significant factor in establishing the drug culture of the 1960's. While drugs such as opium, cocaine, and marijuana had long been in use, there was very little known about hallucinogens before this period. Many historians in decades before had interpreted native mystical writings to think that the writers were drunk on alcohol.

On your way back from Acapulco to Mexico City use the Free two lane road instead of the Toll road. You will see more of the country side following the 18/22 wheelers. I have done both more then once.

Stop by Liza's Bar on Playa Marinero while in PE. Great people! Good food & drinks. Right on the beach.

The first class buses from Oaxaca City to PE go by way of Salina Cruz (260 miles), whereas the direct route across the mountains is about 90 miles. You are going to be spending a lot of time on buses for the PE to Acapulco to Mexico city route. It usually makes more sense to travel overnight and get a good lie flat seat.

The Oaxaca City to PE by tiny prop plane is probably $100-$150 per person each way, but takes about 20 minutes in the air. The second class buses are horrifyingly slow. The private suburban vans are the main way the locals cross the mountains, but they can be scary.

The region between the states of Oaxaca and Guererro is called Costa Chica.

Pinotepa Nacional is about 80 miles north of PE, and is the center of the famous dance, LA Chilena. "La Chilena" is as uniquely associated with the Pacific Coast as "La Bamba" was with the Gulf coast near Veracruz. But thanks to Richie Valens and dozens of covers in the last half century, La Bamba is famous worldwide.

There is a town called Valle Nacional, right on the Ver-Oax state line on Ruta 175, that is well known by birders for its easily accessible habitats and wide variety of birds. The town has a couple of tolerable hotels.
