I agree with this comment. The word itself is probably not the issue, it was almost certainly the context.

The Texas Tornadoes recorded a song "Hey baby que Paso, I want to be your only vato" , I'm pretty sure in that instance vato means 'man" or "dude". You can probably find it on You Tube.
