Default Maybe not so much anymore...

I went to lunch today with a co-worker who is originally from Chihuahua, and he was telling me how bad it is becoming these days, within the last couple of weeks. He said there is an area on the quota highway near Jimenez which has no cell coverage (can't call for help/emergencies), and many people are losing everything, the bad guys are stopping people in nice/new looking vehicles, and just taking them. He also referred to Parral, so maybe between the two, but in any case, just be aware. Even places which were not affected like Cancun, Playa de Carmen, are now seeing cartel violence. Even Merida which was really isolated, is now seeing drug crime.

It is such a shame, the corruption, which breeds violence. My parents used to drive the road between El Paso, and Acapulco each year, with all us kids! Those were some of the best memories of my life, the bonding we did on that three day trip, the fun in Acapulco, Mexico, and all of the little pueblos along the way. It was so innocent back then.

I am a US citizen and my husband wants to take me to MIchoacan Mexico where he is from but his family lives at a ranch and I was wondering is it going to be safe for me. My kids and friends keep saying that I will not come back if I go. I am enough paranoid but everyone else is just making me freak out about going. Were flying to Mexico City then taking a but to his town. We are staying for a week and then he wants to take the bus back to Texas. I am a little afraid to travel back on a bus. Just need advice. I have traveled Europe but never anywhere in Mexico. Any advice for me?

We live at Lake Chapala and drive to various spots in Michoacan often; it is one of the prettiest states in MX. I have never been afraid to drive in Michoacan, be it Patzcuaro, Morelia or any other point. This winter we will return to see the Monarch butterflies at their winter home in Michoacan.

You may also want to look at flights from TX to Morelia rather than bus back to the US...while 1st class buses in MX offer comfort, it is a long trip.

You can take a plane directly from Houston to Morelia via United. Also from Dallas to Morelia via American.
