Want to live somewhere where you have both the advantages of a fully-appointed large communal house and your own private cottage? Where you have your own community of neighbors to share resources, skills and knowledge? Where you know your belongings and pets will be safe whether you take a trip to the supermarket or around the world? Where you know the people around you will help you out if you need it, where you can share wonderful home-cooked meals? Whether you're retired or about to be, or you're younger but would like to have a solid home base, cohousing might suit you.
I'm forming a small 10-14 person (ages 30-70) cohousing community on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful colonial city of Guanajuato, located in an eco zone above a reservoir. Semi-rural, only 10 minutes to a supermarket, pharmacy and gas station, 20 minutes to the town center, 40 minutes to an international airport (BJX).
Communal buildings and land will be placed into a non-profit corporation and members will become its shareholders. The group itself will design the cottages, manage and maintain the property and democratically set its own policies. No real estate agents, outside developers, managers or other third-party people will be involved.
The garage apartment was originally built as a place for a care-giver for my aging parents. It could serve as a guest apartment or, in future, for its original purpose if we need someone on-site.
If you are not already familiar with the concept of cohousing, please read these introductory articles.

Aging Better Together by Anne P. Glass
I have already received many replies of interest on other forums, and the project is moving forward in forming the core group, a certified engineering firm is slated to make an official appraisal of the existing buildings and land. This will form the financial base price of shares. The costs of building the private cottages will depend on what the group decides it needs and wants in terms of size and design, so no firm estimate can be made yet. However, having built my own house here, I can assure you that building costs (not to mention the daily cost of living) are far less than comparable construction in the U.S. or Canada.
Attached are some photos of the land and exterior photos of what will become the communal buildings. If you would like more information, interior photos, diagrams, sketches of proposed cottages, and lists of features, please reply. I will be happy to answer any questions!
