I will be visiting Mexico City from the USA next month. One of my hobbies is to collect used license plates from all over the world to hang on the walls of my garage.

Doe anyone know there I can find auto scrapyards/salvage yards in Mexico city? I'd like to visit some yards and get some plates if possible. Prefer if they are in the reaches of the metro system, but I can hire a taxi if I need to. I have tried to find some by searching online but have not had any luck.

Frankly I would be amazed if you found old license tags. MX is quite strict about vehicles and their licensing...can't imagine a car goes to the junkyard with a tag.

Didn't everyone change their licence plates in the city recently from the "Distrito Federal" plates with the angel to the new "CDMX" plates? You might have an easier time getting the old plates.

The folks that make those signs made of out of date plates will probably suck up all the available plates.
