I used to watch telenovelas a lot and you rarely see a darker skinned mexican with typical indigenous features.
In fact, most of the time, theyll take a white mexican and put a little make up on her instead of actually casting a Mestizo.
That show, Si Tu Supieras is a good example.
Also, most of the Thalia shows from the 90s where like every show is about her being a poor mestizo falling in love with a white millionaire and them living happily ever after. She even speaks slang as to seem authentic.
I bring this up because the image that white mexicans have there is one of wealth and privilege. As most have stated, why would they come here if they already have that there?
I think its more of an issue in Mexico, Central and Northern South America, you rarely see a darker person.
Brazil, where I live, its actually the other way around. You have whites, but also mulatos, really black, not just the caramel ones. LOL on TV playing rich people.
Portugal's official policy of colonialism encouraged racial mixing. Racial mixing certainly occured in Spanish countries, however it was not the official gov policy. That probably explains some of the difference in attitudes.

I think the Criollo population in Latin America as a whole is getting sick&tired of the outrageous indigenista propaganda-see Morales in Bolivia - and is starting to counter-react as in the Sta Cruz region of Bolivia.
