Hi Mexico Forum!

I was just wondering what Mexican schools teach about the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Does it get much attention in schoolbooks? Are many Mexicans still unhappy about it? Personally, I was shocked that the U.S. took 40% of Mexico's territory--and that many Americans actually opposed the war because they thought it was a land grab.

I'd love to hear any answers.

Remember that prior to 1848 there were few people living in what is now our Southwest-----and, most of them stayed on despite given the option of heading to what was left of Mexico.

I don´t think that the USA would have been the same great country it is today with that much less territory and of course so much less people.

To the original poster: They don´t teach that too deep at school. Just barely touch the surface without many facts. As Travelling fella said, the vast majority of Mexicans don´t even think about it.

All those "raza" movements you have in the USA are from people who I´m sure they even aren´t Mexicans. Just what we call "chicanos" or "pochos" who doesn´t even know what their roots are. Please don´t think that all Mexicans are like them, or want the same thing as them.

Cheers

One thing that is overlooked it Guatemala was also part of post 1821 Mexico-----yet, few Mexicans want that place back.

Face it: if our Southwest had became an independent 'Hispanic' nation after 1848 vs. being annexed to the USA-------I doubt that Mexico would want it back either.

Remember El Alamo, Davy Crockett and his heroic trappers against the gigantic Santa Ana's army.
I wonder if we still have today such a fighting spirit as a nation, I doubt it.
Instead we are going entangled in the Middle East, what a mess!

I agree and it is pretty damn sad.

A full blood Mayan Mexican who immigrates legally to the USA oftentimes after 20 years here winds up living better here than a Middle Class paisano SOB
