Are more Americans immigrating to Mexico?
I'm broke with no dough, running out of cash. It suddenly occurred to me I should move to someplace in Mexico where I can live relatively cheaply. Are other people thinking the same thing? Where are they going?

Yes
This pheonomenon has been going on for quite a long time, it is just a slow trickle, but one that has been going on for decades, so you don't hear much about it in the US press becuase it is not noticeable.
However, one should have a nice retirement plan already in place before even considering moving. I think that most who have made the move could have also retired in the US, and this will be the case with me. There would be an initial expense, not any different than in the US, and in many cases, more expensive. I am talking about purchasing a home, vehicle, etc. Once those are taken care of, then retirement living begins.
If one takes the same amount of funds that are spent in the US and applies the same to Mexico, then the lifestyle one can lead would be better, or so it seems. Again, after taking care of basics, shelter, transportation and health insurance first.

Hello Woof, I usually read your posts on the business forum
I don't know how old are you do you plan to retire in Mexico? or arrange a job and live here?
if your idea is to get a job and live in Mexico it would be a lot harder but possible, many americans come to Mexico, invest in the country and live of their business, it is usually easy to get a residence in this way, the same for retirees, but if you just plan to come here and find a job things would be harder, first you would have to speak spanish and either try to get a working permit, what could be hard or be an illegal immigrant, in that case touristic places like cancun, playa del carmen, ixtapa, etc could be an option although there is always the risk of facing deportation.
maybe if you are a bit more specific I could help you more hehe, regards!

Travelling fella,
I would keep a U.S. address and continue my current work. But I'd like to rent a cheap apartment in Mexico. Do you think I can find something for $300 a month? I also need an Internet Connection. And can I take my U.S. car over the border?
I can become fluent in spanish pretty quickly.
Thanks

Oh ok, well the only catch in immigrating this way is that you would need to exit Mexico every 3 months and then come back, that at least until you are able to get your resident visa, or you could tramit it before settling.
300 a month? hmmm well you are lucky because with this crisis the dollar's value against the peso got higher, so 300 dollars are about 4,335 pesos, hmmmmm for that amount it'd be better to seek something on a small/mid size city although you could find something like that in bigger cities too, but it'd be more difficult and the apartment smaller, although for 5,000 pesos a month about 350 dollars you can find a relatively decent apartment in a decent neighboorhood almost anywhere in the country, specially if you come alone and need a 1 - 2 room apartment, in smaller cities you can even rent a big and nice apartment for that amount.
yes you can bring your car to Mexico, but you get a permit that lasts for 6 months only, I don't know if you could go to the USA and then come back with another permit, if you plan to do this maybe a city that is near the border is an option, internet is practically omnipresent in this country so you shouldn't have a problem getting one, and it's relatively cheap.
Hope this helps
regards!

In terms of retirement, the trend is moving away to Mexico, due to rising crime, but also rising real estate prices, especially in the areas Americans have taken over. The same thing has happened in Panama; foreign retirees have made real estate unaffordable to their own kind any more. Ecuador seems to be the new destination. There are parts of that country where the land is still cheap, and condos have been built, as well. But Ecuador, obviously, is more costly to get to.

I heard a lot have gone to San Miguel de Allende. I believe the expatriate population is now 10% of the city's population.
