Heading there on a girls' trip with friends in May. We're staying at a friend's condo in a gated community. She's gone many times and assures us that going to the public beaches is totally safe. We can also pay $40 US to visit the closest resort beach. I'd rather not pay to lay on the sand. Anyone live there or been there recently who visited a public beach? Would we be safe? Are the public beaches guarded by local police as well? TIA
ETA: My friend hasn't been there in 2 years, which is why I ask. Guess I'm wondering if other tourists use the public beaches or just stick to the resorts.

All beaches are public by federal law in Mexico. there is no such a thing as resort beaches (in theory) this means that you can lie down in the beach and enjoy even if there is a resort there, as long as you don't use the resort's property, (beachbeds, towels, etc)

I just was in playa in January, beaches are very safe and nice, there is little shoreline though because hurricanes sank a part of it, but the sea is very nice there, if you want to go to a bigger shoreline i recommend you tulum which is about 45 km far from playa, buses charge cheap, like 50 pesos (3.50 bucks) per passage.

regards

I just thought I would tell you this ahead of time, so that you will not be surprised, the vast majority of women at Playa expose their breasts on the beach.

Thanks for the replies! I didn't realize all the beaches were "public." I wonder what the $40 is then? Maybe with drinks? Anyway, good to know!

I'm not sure, but it sounds like a scam, 40 dollars? that's about 600 pesos, with that amount you could go to a nice restaurant and pay a good dinner, maybe not one of those really expensive top restaurants with wine and everything, but a nice restaurant and a very good meal.

Yes, all of the beaches in Mexico are public. As the other poster said, you WILL see women topless on the main public beach in Playa. You may also see some at the resorts and other beaches.

The $40 is probably to be able to use their pool and such. This is pretty common. You are basically buying a "day pass" to be able to come onto that resorts property without being an overnight guest. Each one will have different restrictions and what it allows. If the resort your getting a "day pass" to is an all-inclusive it may or may not include drinks and food. The resorts staff will be able to discern whom is allowed to have the free flow by the color of the wristband worn. You probably won't be allowed to use the resorts pool or beach towels so find out and bring your own from your resort. The resorts beach is probably just less crowded than the main public beach in Playa is.

If your wanting to do the resort beach for the free drinks IF that is part of the plan, you might want to consider just getting a cheap cooler and buying your own drinks at a market and hitting the public beach instead. The further away the resort is the higher the taxi fare will be. If that is of a concern to your group.

Just depends on what kind of environment you want to "lay on the sand" in. Also be warned that some of the resorts have VERY rocky beaches that are not that easy to wade or get into the water.
