I was just talking to a man from Juarez the other day about the sudden escalation in crime there. He's from the people with money and he has several relatives who have recently been kidnapped and held for ransom.
He said flat out it's because the border has become difficult for the cartels, they aren't getting their drug loads over and that's leaving them without money. He said they are turning to kidnapping innocent people as a way to get money and the ransoms they demand are not outrageous because the cartels want the victims families to get together the money quickly, pay it, and the victims are released shaken but unharmed. His family paid and all victims are physically fine.
I think it's a fallacy to believe that hard core criminals accustomed to having plenty of easy money are going to give that us easily. They aren't going to put on their working clothes and try to get a job at a maquila, if working hard for a living was their thing, they wouldnt' have gone the route they did. Drugs trafficking into the USA isn't the only crime they're willing to commit, kidnap for ransom gets you some good money too.
Wow! I completely agree! With or without legalization there will be crime. Why not make a few bucks from it. Use it to help the poor, fund cancer research, etc.
