What happens is that after Mexico became an empire that lasted for 8 months only, after it's breakup they created a republic that was closely influenced constitutionally by the recently born United States of America, even though this model didn't work in Mexico, the name of United States of Mexico remained.

I came across that in an historical book on Hinduism. Claims made that relics of Hindu temples, gods and goddesses have been found in Mexico.

Any truth to that?

Well -- it's obviously up to the people of Mexico what they want to call it, but I can see it's not quite like the USA where the separate states formed a union. I think the USA could use a name change too because the original union of states with limited federal government has been replaced by a very strong centralist government.
