Default Mexico name must be Mexico.

You would put your child the name of a neighbor? Not me. Not that I did not have good co-condominium, but not to that degree I developed a friendship with any of them. It seems unlikely, in fact, that gesture a cronyism between two people who share the same common areas and is competing for the same parking spaces and different times of celebration and silence. Such coexistence is not easy. And do not say when the neighbor is more rich and powerful and took to bad half of its field and has repeatedly interfered in his family affairs. Let me ask if you were in that situation before the moneybags of the colony would be re-baptized the firstborn aggressive in his honor, you would like to rename after suffering their abuse?

I appeal to the simile in the absence of a better one. And is that our country is officially called the United Mexican States because when it drafted the 1824 Constitution was invincible admiration for our northern neighbor: The United States was the most powerful, most progressive, most prosperous continent, the first which had won its independence and dazzled by their example that Republican, liberal and federalist. And just for the latter, for that federalism as well said Fray Servando Teresa de Mier imitate illogical, most constituents chose the name "America" followed by the name "Mexico". After all, Miguel Ramos Arizpe and his co-religionists were the majority and insisted that the fledgling republic was the product of a federal pact like the Yankees, even Fray Servando shouting from the rooftops that the circumstances were the opposite: there were thirteen colonies agreed to join into a whole, and here a whole breaking in many states by the will of the center.

The fact is that so they put the baby and is still calling. And incidentally, although I have some doubts about the appropriateness of the analogy of a neighbor, the child seems unquestionable. Because I've always argued that Mexicans should see our country more like our subsidiaries that as our country, and therefore the feeling that must move is the most filiotismo patriotism, our love for Mexico must be more like a father to feels for his son, which means giving more than receiving, caring for more than being cared for, educating more than being educated, that is how citizens of a nation we treat adolescent. Well, it turns out that our subsidiaries have always called him by a sort of nickname that derives from its constitutional name. We do not tell the United Mexican States, but Mexico. So we know it all, inside and outside the country, and so we always refer to it. The official nickname is only used on government paperwork. Yet when a group of MPs from several parties suggested in 1993 that formalized the unofficial, was raised an immediate rejection by Congress. He almost sacrilege that should qualify for such a claim. It was unacceptable that someone would dare to suggest even the renaming of the country! Who the hell wanted to Mexico called Mexico?

I'm not anti-American. Moreover, the fact that our adjective-Mexican Americans could be copied from the neighbor for having me upset about the copy rather than copying. What prompts me to ask the legal name change of our country is the rejection of imitation, from whatever source. I think the great civilizations are born of originality, Dostoevsky would say that a nation can not exist without a sublime idea that no society can aggrandizement without a new worldview and a project of civilization itself. This idea was termed reefs for many years in these very pages of Excelsior. This neologism coined the word that exists in the dictionary of the Royal Academy is the antonym: misoneism referring to the search for the new, invention, creativity. I am convinced that only those who understand their own summit of greatness can hope to achieve. Those engaged in imitation, to follow the lead of the powerful, not beyond underdevelopment and mediocrity. So I hope to my country to be seedbed of innovation. And so I propose that we start from the beginning.

Mexico should be called Mexico. The name is not written in this country or our subsidiaries must be his name. Mexicans do not identify as the United Mexican States, but as Mexico. So we know the nominal root of our national identity. If we have raised so much unrealistic to constitutional status, why should we not constitutionalize this reality? Someone tell me that there are several far-reaching changes and urgent than that, and I shall reply that I agree: it is a state reform, tax reform, a reform to create unemployment insurance and universal health care system, reform and several more educational reforms. But unfortunately my prediction is true that the incoming Legislature will have no incentive to agree to any far-reaching reform, if not we will see significant and profound changes, why not put this item on the agenda? Hopefully in the next three years so it could legislate, do not you think?

Very interesting. Yes, Mexico has always been Mexico. However, I've always thought there was a bigger reason why the "United Mexican States of America" was its name. Maybe someone can explain this but if this has been its history why change it? Would it then be called Mexico de America? It just doesnt sound the same.

What happens is that after Mexico became an empire that lasted for 8 months only, after it's breakup they created a republic that was closely influenced constitutionally by the recently born United States of America, even though this model didn't work in Mexico, the name of United States of Mexico remained.

You're lucky not to live in my area. Here we have "El pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio Porcuincula". But most of us just call it 'L.A.'....

Default Makshika?

The Sanskrit word for Mexico is Makshika.

I came across that in an historical book on Hinduism. Claims made that relics of Hindu temples, gods and goddesses have been found in Mexico.

Any truth to that?

Well -- it's obviously up to the people of Mexico what they want to call it, but I can see it's not quite like the USA where the separate states formed a union. I think the USA could use a name change too because the original union of states with limited federal government has been replaced by a very strong centralist government.

I'm sure Art Bell has a few thoughts on this. Have you thought of emailing him?..
