Unless I missed it--in our house we have an aljibe in which water is stored. I suspect that it too is of Arabian origin.

You are correct. Aljibe comes from Al Gibb, which means "the pit" in Arabic. According to etimologias.dechile.net. "The Pit, where we store water...at at times prisoners." Thanks for the new word, now I know el aljibe is "the tank."

Since I only know "al" really in Arabic, I used to wonder, "How on earth do they say " 'Alexandria' " LOL but it's not "Al Alexandria" it's something like "al iskanderaya" (Even if I could write that in Arabic, I'm sure they would del my post grr). Apparently "aliph" can be pronounced in MANY many many different ways depending on placement etc.

Actually "ELI" is the word for god. ALLAH refers to the pagan moon god which the so called prophet picked as his "one" god when becoming monotheistic.

Spanish words with Arabic orgin:

Guadalquivir river in Spain(from al-wadi al-kibir, meaning the Great Valley)
Andalusia(al-Andalus), a region in Spain, also where the Guadalquivir is located.

------

Castilian is just a dialect of Spanish, just as Mexican. Generic and neutral Spanish is shared by all Spanish speakers.

The richest Spanish is found in Latin America. Here the language is too concise and people don't talk much, so the Spanish language here is not as rich as 50 years ago, or as rich as in more traditional countries.

No, Muslism copied older names existing before. Andalusia = Land of vandals. Guadalquivir = Rio Quiver, etc.

The Moors Arabized many names ej: Valentia (actually "valencia") became known as Balansiya, is not the case of Al andalus but in theory the name comes from "al vandalus", many vandals entered to Morocco from south Spain.
