Living without a car in Monterrey seems to be up to par with New York City.

Reasons
--------
1.Public Buses stop for you in Monterrey instead of you walking long distances to a bus stop. They are very abundant with one arriving every 15 minutes even an hour away from the city.
2.Roaming taxis are equally everywhere through out the metro area and abundant. So if you are in a hurry then you can catch a taxis for a low fee instead of a bus.
3.Light Rail is a third option in central Monterrey which provides safe and fast transportation to the city. Metrorrey has the highest ridership in North America.

What do you think? Any Comments?

Not sure what prompted your post, but I would add that Mexico, in general, has a superb public transportation system that makes a car virtually unnecessary in any part of the country. What foresight the country showed, for example, to have created a state-of-the-art Metro in Mexico City in 1968. It's cheap, reliable, comfortable, and extensive in its coverage. Add low-cost taxis and peseros (buses), and you get a 1-2-3 winning formula.

Although urban transport in the city has improved is not even near to NYC.

Monterrey is a city that despises the pedestrian and workships automobile.

Would be more fair comparison with cities like Dallas and Houston, you go very high when compared to NYC.

Very little of the transportation is truly "public". Mexico just has a lot more potential customers, but if the car buying wave and increased wealth path continue Mexicans will eventually be looking at far fewer choices because city bus lines will go out of business.

Monterrey public transportation is a joke. I attempted riding it last summer and it was absurd. The metro rail is anything but comprehensive, with one line that hardly covers any residential part of town. The schedules are wishful thinking and the buses , until a couple years ago, were ghetto U.S. school bus rejects. Do people use public transport in MTY? Obviously, but anyone who can afford a clunker will prefer to drive.

Mexico City, however, has an excellent transportation system for those who are not of the faint of heart. If they had more cops riding the trains and let the bus drivers carry guns or rifles or something, it would be a superb transportation system. I have been a victim of crime at stations a couple of times, but it really is the most convenient way to get around. A car in Mexico City is not only unnecessary, but almost somewhat burdensome, as parking is a huge hassle, it's limited and it's expensive. AND the insurance costs are outrageous, you have a 5000 MXP deductible and you just might get it stolen if you drive it anywhere.

Intra-city transport in Mexico spanks Greyhound in the US. Probably because more people rely on it, the bus system is wonderful, rapid, comfortable, and frequent.

Inter-city is another matter.
