Default President Calderon Has Big Plans !!

I've been reading President Calderon's web site México - Presidencia de la República (click on english version if you can't read spanish) over the last several months and he's really trying to modernize Mexico that i take from it although only so much money to go around. He's been dedicating new Water Treatment plants and Sewer systems and also said when he leaves office that Mexico will offer universal health care to all citizens and say's his dream is for mexicans to earn as much as Americans in Mexico so they don't have to leave Mexico.

He's over in Europe and met with China's President and India's Prime Minister to bolster trade and investment and he's meeting every head of state in Europe and meeting with top business execs in Europe to invest in Mexico. Also taking on Drug Lords and death threats from them and raised pay of all military soildiers to combat these traffickers.Anyway just wanted to post about these so we can see at least someone is finally trying to modernize that country but it will take time.....

Like the Mexican President even matters?!?!?!!??

What other country enjoys such rich oil reserves, free trade agreements with the LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD right next door, vast precious metal deposits, two beautiful coastlines, a thriving tourist industry........but still a nation in poverty and disarray.

Mexico is where it is today because of its people. And Calderon cant fix that.

Once the cheap labor factor is gone, or the Multinational's find a new cheaper /better labor pool, Mexico is f@cked.

They survive because they are cheaper than robots at this point.

Once Pemex runs outa oil (which it has already stated will happen in less than 10 years on current proven oil reserves) Mexico will be in deep trouble.

Yeah...the people there have to take a stand. I was amazed t hear the Palestinian people wanting the US, Europe, and other countires to intervene in Hamas basically running wild throught the streets taking over areas in the Gaza strip. Am I wrong or did these people not "Vote" Hamas in? Were they not "taunting" the US like "You can't tell us who to vote for" when we begged them not to vote in Hamas.

I guess I said all that to say like they need to take responsibility and call these terrorists out, so do the Mexican people need to take a stand against their government "pimping" the crap out of them. Such beautiful people with such a rich culture. But they have to come to the point where enough is enough.

I've never been to Mexico but have always been fascinated by the culture. I never understood why Mexicans would want to leave their country so badly until recently. It's understandable why. But, I don't blame any of the peoples. Say all the great things you want about America but this country thrives on other countries. We borrow all our money and we use poor people from other nations to make our stuff. So in better words, most American crimes take place in other countries. We preach ethics at home but act unethical away from home. This is such a great place? Many people say that this country was great before the rich English came and raped the surroundings. Years later we ended up with a bunch of states and many were unique in their own. So, if you whatever you wanted out of life you could pick where to live. Well, that's dying a slow death as well. The monster of $$$ was created and it destroys. Many say Montana was great. Now it's not. Iowa used to be great...now it's only good. But, it's all going downhill and say what you want about a Mexican President but can ANY president be as bad as GW Bush?? I think not.

No, no, but if you've lived through the economic crisis's in the past (in the 80's) then you have a good idea of whats coming.

Seriously, if you're Mexican, you know how fragile the economy is. Pemex oil production accounts for like 60% of the total economy, and production levels have been falling since 2002.

New US immigration legislation could effectively stop the BILLIONS of dollars in remittances flowing back to Mexico.

You have to admit, Mexico is in a vary dangerous economic situation right now.

Yes, it is a frail state of affairs; however, as you point out, Mexico is rich in many resources. Undoubtedly, the country’s future depends on our ability to exploit those resources to our benefit, so that we can stop depending on things like oil or the unfair illegal immigration game, for which the United States set all the rules. It will take will from the Mexican people and its government to break the vicious cycle of corruption and racism that has, for so long, restrained our development.

It won’t be easy or fast, but I believe that this will happen and that President Calderón is taking the appropriate steps.

Good points all.
The horrific corruption of the Mexican government is a major factor in why a country of about 740,000 sq. mi. and very rich in resources and labor, with a population of over 107 million, has a GDP of one trillion dollars, or about $10,000 per capita.
Japan, with 145,000 sq. mi. and relatively almost no natural resources, with a population of over 127 million, has a GDP of $3.9 trillion or $30,700 per capita.
What's the difference?
Work ethic, government integrity or lack of, drug addiction or lack of, and the will of the people make a country.

IMO the best thing that could have happened to Mexico in the last 10 years was for George II to have invaded Mexico instead of Iraq, instituted a Marshall Plan there and remade the civilization as US forces did when they took Cuba from the Spanish and installed sewers, cut disease drastically, and otherwise cleaned up a total mess including a dysfunctional government.
Unethical to invade? Maybe. Maybe not.
But compared to most other invaders, who slaughter, rape, pillage, and generally lay waste to the countryside and enslave the population, the countries the USA has defeated militarily have done quite well, thank you.
Mexico would be on the road today if Bush had a brain instead of a jalapeno in his cranial cavity.

Ludicrous—everything except the part about W's cranial cavity
