Mexican dentists are truly the good, the bad, and the ugly. I've met some of each category.

If you are anywhere near the Brownsville area, I recommend without reservation Dra. Jessica Rodriguez--web site is periodoncia.com.mx

I agree that the very best way is a recommendation from someone you trust who has actually used the service.

If you absolutely cannot find anybody to give a recommendation for the area where you are, here is a tip: When I was in Nuevo Progreso last year looking for dentist I walked up and down the main street(s). It seems like every second or third door is a dentist, and most of the offices are glass-fronted, where you can look into the waiting room.

So I looked into the waiting rooms and when I would see retired gringo couples sitting in a waiting room I would pop in and talk to them: "Hi, I just noticed you sitting in here and I am looking for a good dentist. Have you used this dentist before? How has the service been, etc." They will be happy to share their experiences. Most are there because they've used the dentist before or somebody "back home" had a good experience with them.

Naturally you evaluate the person you are speaking with (look at their teeth, haha).

Works fine--Buena suerte!

Default If Brownsville, TX is convenient for you . . .

You know, I really wish there were some way I could reach out and dispel the fear that is keeping so many of you from trying the Mexican dentists. I know about that fear, because I had a bad case of it myself--I would never have considered using a Mexican dentist until last year when I was informed that I needed to have gum surgery or my teeth were going to start falling out in the near future. I simply was not willing/able to pay the obscene prices wanted by the USA dentists.

And trying to find a good dentist in a different country, culture/language can be extremely intimidating. And the nature of dental work (for me) is that it's very easy to put off--I knew I had to do it, but I'll do it tomorrow.

Finally, driven by desperation, I bit the bullet and started the search for a good Mexican dentist. When I asked other Americans about Mexican dentists, nobody seemed to have any recommendations; and the prevailing attitude was that perpetuated by USA dentists--that Mexican dentists are inferior and extremely risky across the board and only a desperate fool would use them.

What a crock!!!! I am here to tell you that the Mexican dentist I ended up with is FAR better, nicer, more accommodating, congenial, etc. that ANY USA dentist I've ever seen.

In April I moved to Hawaii and I found myself procrastinating again when it came to finding a dentist--let's face it, I really hate the whole way USA dentists operate--the sterile, "professional" atmosphere, the humorless money-takers at the gate, the whole impression that they are far more interested in getting paid than in rendering service. OK, I know they're not really THAT bad, but still . . .

Here is an email that I sent yesterday to my beloved Mexican dentista, Dr. Jessica Rodriguez in Matamoros:

" OK, so I went down to Honolulu today for my first "periodontal maintenance" since your treatment.

I want you to know that there is significant improvement in the depth-of-pockets situation! The periodontist compared the depths today with the depths off the chart that you made last November (before the surgeries)--they remarked at how well my gums have progressed and told me that you really did a good job!!

Just wanted to let you know and again to thank you for being so great! Regards, Clark"

If you are torn with indecision, you may wish to read my previous posts on this thread. Heck, send me an email if you have questions. But don't let fear and phony propaganda cost you your teeth!!!!!

The Dentist, someone I have been terified of for close to 70 years until I went to a dentist in Mexico. I can not tell you how wonderful they are. I had a root canal and went back for some jaw surgery that was not covered by my health insurance. They made me feel so comfortable and the personal attention not only by the dr. doing the work but the others in the office stepping in to have a look. The dentist I went to was recomended to me by a total stranger and I could not be hapier. Before I made an appointment my daughter and I went to the office and checked it out. She could not believe what she saw. The dentists closer to the border charge more than the ones the farther into Mexico that you get. I have a wonderful dentist in Tepic that I could recomend also. I know many snow birds that plan all of their dental work around their trips to Mexico. A friend in Florida had all of her teeth pulled in San Miguel de Allende and her teeth made there and she is one happy camper and has never had any problem with them. The dentist knew she was there by herself and daily stoped by to check on her.

Many years ago I had dental work done by a dentist in Cuernavaca who was absolutely superb. IMO the dentists in the large and medium sized cities of northern, central, and south-central Mexico are of high quality. However I might be reluctant to go to a dentist in Oaxaca or Chiapas.

Ironically, although said dentist's English wasn't that good, I found him easier to communicate with than most dentists in California these days given that dentistry in CA is almost exclusively the domain of Asians these days. I can converse in Spanish but not in Chinese or Korean.

There is a place in Mexico called Ajijic it is 45 minutes from Guadalajara. I lived there for six years, it is basically a retirement haven for Americans and Canadians so you will hear English spoken. Ajijic is blessed with a great Dentist his name is Angel (pronounced Anthill in Spanish) Medeles he did all of my work including 2 root canals and work for so many of my friends all were happy. I have since moved to Peru and have a lovely Dentist here also. I have the contact information for his brother who is a Vet also in Ajijic I am sure he can tell you how to reach him. Both brothers speak great English. jesusmedeles@prodigy.net.mx phone numbers (376)766-1009 or 376-766-3862. Good Luck... Tell Angel Jamie Loco sent ya.
