Not of great importance, just curious what do others think of the name change from Metrozoo to Zoo Miami?? Why the name change in the first place?

Why not The Miami Zoo? Like The San Diego Zoo, The Cincinnati Zoo -
Zoo Miami just doesn't sound right to me

Not sure why they changed it, especially as this is their 30th year of the zoo. Maybe because it was the 30th anniversary is why they wanted to update the name. The name Metro Zoo, can be any Metro Zoo, so by naming it Zoo Miami, people know where it is, when they talk about it. Especially on the national scene. I like it! Zoo Miami sounds hip compared to the The Miami Zoo.

Apparently because it's easier to translate into Spanish (seriously). Honestly makes more sense than "Metrozoo."

I think the only people in this country that know about Miami, Ohio are the people that live around that area and some people in Miami. I heard about them because they have a college that sounds similar to UM I think it's called Miami University.

Hopefully it will attract more visitors.

I heard they spent $811,000 on the new sign in front of the zoo,it's OK but $811,000,WOW!!I live like 5 minutes away and just came back from their $5 days at the zoo to celebrate their 30th anniversary and July 4th.I hadn't been in years and I was somewhat impressed with some of their newer areas,I'll still end up going to Busch Gardens 50 times before I go to the zoo again but I thought it was pretty nice. They've been talking about adding a waterpark to the zoo for like 10 years now and after spending a hot muggy day at the zoo I think they need it really bad.But after hearing Lockhart Stadium in Ft.Lauderdale will likely be getting a Shlitterbahn waterpark in the next two years it makes the chances for another waterpark to be built less likely. As far as the name I kind of like it,I'll probably just call it "the zoo" now instead of metrozoo.

It should be just a zoo, no water park or rides. Those are different crowds( older and less intellectual)

I live 5 minutes from the zoo and not counting this weekends $5 admission the zoo is usually pretty empty to deserted. The few water play areas at the zoo this weekend were full of kids, and even some adults,it's just too hot most of the year to just visit the zoo.The talk to build a waterpark at the zoo was outside of the zoo in the parking lot,I'm sure Ron Mcgill would like an extra 20,000 people coming into the zoo in the weekend for the waterpark, they could offer a zoo/waterpark combo ticket which in the long run would double their business.

It was originally called Metrozoo because the county was originally called Metro-Dade County. The county has since been changed to Miami-Dade County and the zoo decided it would better market itself with Miami in its name.

The $800k was not just for the sign but a complete redo of the front entrance that is not fully completed yet.

Not to nitpick, but the county was Dade County before it became Miami-Dade County. You are on the right path though--the name Metrozoo comes from the county's inclination to throw the word "metro" into everything at the time it was opened.

And since I didn't add it on my first post--while the new name may have "Miami" in the name I also have a "don't fix it if it ain't broke" approach to the old name.
