Default Miami-Dade police purchase Drone

WSVN-TV - Drone may be coming to Miami-Dade

"The Miami-Dade Police Department recently finalized a deal to buy a drone, which is an unmanned plane equipped with cameras. Drones have been used for years in Iraq and Afghanistan in the war against terror."

...

"Honeywell has applied to the FAA for clearance to fly the drone in urban areas. This has never been allowed before, but if it does happen, the Miami-Dade Police Department will be the first police agency in the US to use the technology."

-----------------------------------------------

The article talks about the privacy concerns and the cost concerns but never mentions the danger to pilots. If this drone is being used for surveilance work then the guy flying it is going to be looking down at things on the ground. What about looking where he's flying? Would be allow a cop cruising around in his squad car to be looking out the window to the left for five or ten minutes straight and just hope he didn't hit anything in front of him?
Small planes don't have radar. They practice "See and Avoid", which means you have to be constantly looking for other planes and then maneuver to avoid them. There is no one on the ground monitoring you and telling you where to go. What happens when the guy flying this thing crashes into a Cessna and bings it down killing the pilot, passengers and anyone on the ground that the wreckage lands on? The FAA has not approved this drone for use over populated ares yet and I hope that they never do. It is hard enough to see a small plane flying directly toward you at a combined closing speed of 200+ mph. Seeing a stealthy drone would be impossible.

Reporting at its finest.......

The video does not show the T-Hawk, the Hawk is a 20lbs device with no wings, like a flying wet vac.

When flying, there is two people, one for operations, one for mission capabilities.

The Hawk can hover right off the ground, all the way up to thousands of feet. Most likely they will use it to hover a few dozen feet.

I think it is a waste of money if any gov entity paid for it.

If red light cameras are fine, then why not drones? Just put in a radar to catch people for speeding, and then red light cameras become yesterday's chump change. That'll pay for the drone really quick.

Really??? Seriously??? We're talking drones flying over a dense, complex urban environment...and the Miami-Dade police at the helm!?!?

Yeah, I figured it had to be something smaller when they talked about the top speed. Still, that makes it worse in some way because it would be even harder to spot.
If it can hover then all non-helicopter aircraft would have right of way over it -- meaning any accident would be the police department's fault. That's small comfort to the families though.

Seriously. We've seen how some of the cops in this city drive. I can't imagine they would fly any better.

Tell that to the people who lived in the former Soviet Union. (The Nazi analogy is so overused. I figured I'd go for something a little more recent).
