I'm a 41 year old black male considering moving from Camden nj to Miami.
My apologies in advance, because I do have a tall order. I don't want to move from one hood to another (jumping out the pan into the fire) but I still want that city feel abundant with transportation and a half way decent nice area. Now, I know I have to be realistic, therefore because I dont' know I'm going to ask. Where do I need to be to get this? Where it is at least half way safe, city feel, nice area, plenty of transportation and not to devastating on the pockets. I thank everyone in advance for the help, please don't cuss me out to bad it's a tall order I know. I'm not in the life no more I'm done with drama please help.
The transportation system is okay, but it all depends on where you live.
Really we need to know your budget before we can suggest an area, as well as your bed/bath requirements, type of unit you'd like (single family, condo, townhouse, etc.) as well as whether you want to rent or buy.
There are plenty of good areas, plenty of bad areas, and plenty of areas in between, but again, it doesn't make much sense in suggesting areas without knowing how much is "devastating to the pockets."
Thanx so much for the quick response. I got about $700.00/month to rent a room, I spotted a few half way decent places on craigs list, but I just don't know what area to go. The transportation is going to be very important, don't get me wrong at my budget I'll have no choice but for the area to be a tad bit raw, but my thing is I just don't want to be in an out and out warzone you know. I hope this helps you in order to help me thanx in advance. I've seen quite a few posts or replys by you so your advice will be definitely considered. Also I'm not bilingual I don't know maybe that helps a little as well.

public transportation in Miami isn't great. If you want to use public transit to get around then you need to stick to places close to the Metrofail or in South Beach. In your budget South Beach is possible, Brickell if you rent a room with a roommate. Downtown Miami maybe in an older building. I would suggest getting a roommate then you could get into a nice building most likely.

$700 will be fairly hard, but there are some open, very small, units around South Dixie Hwy which is where the Metrorail runs and where you'd like to be.
You wouldn't really like anything above the Dolphin Expressway, except perhaps Allapattah. All are better options than Camden.
Stay away from any address that is NW above about 36th Street.
You really want to stay below SW 8th St and east of the Palmetto, but like I said, if you come up with nothing, Allapattah (in some areas) isn't terrible.
Oh, and doggie, "Metrofail" does not help the cause, shame shame.

Transportation...well...in your price range, somewhere along Biscayne Blvd. There is where all the busses constanly pass by...there are many areas that have been gentrified but several buildings haven't. Those are the ones that will be in your price range. The area is a mix of prostitutes, druggies, people down on their luck, urban pioneers and yuppies who have overpaid for their condos. You can walk to several stores or take the bus to where you need to go.
Little Havana has a lot of bus options if you live near Flagler, but if you aren't looking for a 99% Latin community of immigrants, it may not be the right fit.
SOBE is also an option, but that works mainly if you plan on working somewhere on the beach or downtown.
Miami without a car is no treat no matter how much some posters try to present it. My advise to anyone who moves here without a car is to be within walking distance of a supermarket and other businesses that you need to frequent. Keep the bus as a last resort because many do not run on time or do not go where you need to or simply have long waits in between connecting busses, so youcan spend a large part of your day commuting.
The best advise I can give you is to move to Miami WITH A CAR. You will need it, most jobs here require you to have a car since they know public transportation sucks. Even if it is a clunker, have it for local travel and stay off the expressways.
If you can't drive for whatever reason, in the long run Miami won't be for you. It is doable on bus and metrorail for a short time while getting off your feet, but if you don't have a chance of getting a car a year down the road, you will go crazy.
That's a very nice chin check, but hey that's what I need the real deal with no candy coating. Thanx again

Public transportation in Miami is not that good. It's not like Jersey. And there are lots of rough and tumble areas in South Florida. The nicer neighorhoods in Miami are relatively expensive. I think you're going to get frustrated finding something that fits your requirements in Miami. Why do you want to go to Miami? I am not trying to burst your bubble. I love Miami and I live in NJ. However, Miami is a tale of too cities...if you have a good job and good income, then Miami can be great. However, there's not much in the middle or for the middle. If you're at the other end of the spectrum, Miami can be very frustrating. Also, the job market is not good in south Florida and wages are much lower.
