Hi guys,
Been in Miami for a week now and I'm loving it! She and I are still in the honeymoon phase, but either way, I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Anyways. I'm a road biker. I've already taken to grabbing coconuts and drinking their water on my longer bike trips. Had a BIG one in Key Biscayne today. Nearly two cups of sweet, electrolyte-replenishing goodness.

However, I need some local advice now. Word has it that Florida is known for having oranges...go figure! However, I've yet to see ONE single orange tree on my rides.

I'm wondering if ya'll could point me in the direction of a good area to bike where I'll be able to grab/(borrow from someone's front yard), the occasional orange or two when I'm getting hungry on my rides?

Thanks
Patrick

From my experience the orange trees were north of Miami.

Also, those are someone's crop, their way of life and having grown up around apple orchards, I can assure you that they don't take kindly to people coming up and taking their fruit, for free. I'd be careful with that.

central florida for citrus. citrus greening (huanglongbing) has basically wiped out any citrus that weren't cut down by USDA's nazi tree cutting program they tried to wipe out citrus canker with. youll see them at fisheating creek and northward. you also see isolated ones out in the everglades planted by indians and such but isolated enough where they dont get disease.

i second the comments about picking peoples fruit. there are signs out in the redlands warning of being shot if you take mango or lychee.

there are places up in central florida where citrus trucks turn and fruit spills off the top. youll want to look up in central fl. and look around the indian river citrus groves. tons of fruit up there.

I third it. Vegetation in urban and suburban areas (with regard to things like citrus) was planted by a person and chances are they want their fruit.

The only thing I can think that you can get for free is the coconut like you've done, but even then probably only ones from city trees. If you pick them from somebody's yard they're libel to be upset because even if they don't eat the coconut they like it for ornamental purposes.

I might suggest buying an orange or two from the store and taking it with you on your ride. If you feel extra adventuresome you can throw it on the ground, pick it up and pretend like you found it so you can get that extra George of the Jungle feel

this is why i know of people here who plant varieties of mangos that are green when ripe in their front yards to discourage all the dog walkers from stealing their mangos.

you can however pickup and eat all the fallen dates from the date palms in miami beach. they just sweep them up and throw them away. i have a friend who lives in guyana who feels this is criminal and that they should be donating the fruit.

hahaha!

You could try asking the owner to selll you an orange or two. If they have entire orchards full of htem they'll probably just give you a couple for your honesty. It's not worth their time to try and negotiate a price for one or two oranges. I think the orange will taste even better knowing it was come by honestly, but maybe that's just me.

Omg its just an orange. When i went to central FL there were BILLIONS OF ORANGES. they fell off the trucks and fell by the wayside in the gutter on the street. If you go north and hit up one of the thousands of mega groves with millions of oranges take one or two its NO BIG DEAL. Millions probably rot as they fall to the ground anyways.

And for the record: I have a mango tree....that drops like 500 ENORMOUS mangoes which we always end up throwing out even if i eat at least one or two a day. You can't handle so many - i always try and give them away but everyone i know has mangoes too so its no use. So its not like its the end of the world.

Since when did people get so picky? geez its not like they wanna go up with baskets and make off with half the tree. If some girl came up to my tree and picked an orange or two i'd have no problem. Now...if she did this every day, well thats not cool cuz she's abusing. But a fruit or two especially if you see dozens and dozens of fruits is not really a big deal. Especially if its in/near a sidewalk.

I'd relentlessly stab to death anyone who stole my fruit and use them to fertilize my trees. =)
It's my #1 hobby.
You think I'm joking =)
How many bodies do you think I can I hide under the mulch?
