Well, as a product of Miami-Dade County Schools (c/o 1997) and a former MDCPS educator (2001-2004), after teaching in two different states (Virginia and Georgia), I can tell you that the majority of MDCPS schools need work. The school district is full of corrupt individuals--it's being cleaned up now, but it's going to take a heck of a lot of work. There are some schools that are diamonds in the rough, but they definitely aren't the norm.
Oh, I wanted to add, those grades from the state don't mean much. A school can get an A grade yet only 54% of the kids are reading on grade level. I found that out last night while looking @ test scores on greatschools.net.
I would place more emphasis on the percentage of kids actually PASSING the FCAT vs. the actual grade the state gives a particular school.

Attended public schools here, junior high and high school disasterous education. So I became at teacher! And work for MDPS. Have too many stories, but it has gotten much better with the new superintendant and more accountability. I work hard with inner city kids. Love them. If I were you , focus on schools in Region three. South area, Key Biscayne, Grove, Gables, Coral Way area.

Formerbronxgirl , Cooper City is not Miami it is in Broward County and closer to Fort Lauderdale . Cooper City is still majority " Anglo " with both a Hispanic and African - American population . It has its nice areas and is close to Plantation , Weston & Davie three very nice areas with pretty good schools .
Unlike Miami , Cubans are the minority in this area and no you do not need to speak Spanish to get around like in Miami . Don't listen to Cixel as he or she is a loser and only makes negative comments about South Florida .

Sorry, but none. Yes, there may be some decent elementary schools if you have enough money to buy a house in the right neighborhood, but things get much worse in middle school, so you would just be postponing the problem. The reality is, if you can afford it, buy a cheaper house and choose private school. South Florida has a very long way to go when it comes to public education.

It would be a lie to say that there aren't teachers who care. I would say 1 out of every 8 of my teachers wasn't either hating life or completely worthless. I saw principals get knocked unconcious, people chasing my school bus waving guns, tables thrown down stairwells at other kids and lots of drugs. Mind you, I have never even been drunk in my life, so this is what I saw as an outsider. The only way to avoid most of this was to never make eye contact with people and stay in the honors classes. The classes where you might interract with the bad groups of kids (P.E., woodshop, etc.), well, take those classes over the Summer when their uncarring parents let them run wild.
I can't tell you which area is the best because kids are bussed in from many miles away to good schools to make them all pretty scary. The high school I heard the fewest problems about was Palmetto. It is East of US1 and South of Dadeland. For real though, move to another part of the state. The happiest day of my life was when I left Miami.
I'd say 95% of my friends from high school have also left Miami (by choice) and will probably never go back permanately.
